Bush gives praise and advice to Texans

FEDERAL RESPONSE
Bush gives praise and advice to Texans
Visiting Austin, he thanks rescue crews and urges evacuees to not rush back home
By JULIE MASON
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

AUSTIN - Visiting his home state for a firsthand look at the response to Hurricane Rita, President Bush praised emergency operations Saturday and urged Texans, particularly Houstonians, to heed the instructions of state authorities in the aftermath.

I know for a lot of folks in the state it's been a miserable time," Bush said at the Texas Emergency Operations Center here.

Criticized during the Hurricane Katrina aftermath for being out of touch with the crisis, Bush showed a notable engagement with Rita details. He warned motorists who might want to instantly return to Houston after evacuating the area that nurses needed a way through the gridlock to get to work at the city's hospitals.

"I would ask for those of you in the state who are in safe places now, not to hurry back to a city like Houston, and let these highways flow with necessary goods and services to the people in deep East Texas who have been affected," he said.

Texas evacuees, told to stay away, returning

Sunday, September 25, 2005; Posted: 9:12 a.m. EDT (13:12 GMT)

Vehicles travel toward Galveston,
Texas, in the early hours of Sunday on
Interstate 45.

HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) -- Taillights and headlights illuminated rain-slicked roads of Gulf Coast Texas in the pre-dawn hours Sunday as residents jammed the roads to return after evacuating for Hurricane Rita.

Authorities had urged evacuees not to return, warning that conditions might not be safe at home, emergency crews needed to move quickly on the highways and fuel trucks still needed to re-supply gas stations.

Still, early Sunday, traffic tie-ups snarled Interstate 10 into Houston and Interstate 45 into Houston and beyond to Galveston.

So far, the return of 2.5 million people into the area has not caused the 15- to 20-hour delays caused on the way out. Lines at gas pumps, however, grew as the morning progressed.

3. Several things come to mind
Propped up for a photo op and made to miss his Saturday morning cartoons.

However...I see something else.
He looks sickly. His color is sallow. His hair is thinning.
He has lost weight.
If I didn't know better...I would wonder if he has cancer and is undergoing treatment.
He doesn't look well at all.

9. Well, the creep is still under Tecumseh's Curse
Which means he will not finish out his term, one way or the other.

Cancer, eh? I don't know. I think he's been undergoing treatment at the Crawford Imperial Pig Farm all along for some sort of serious condition.

But you're right, I hadn't noticed before but he's definitely lost weight. Good. I hope he loses so much weight that it forces Americans to realize he's not fit for office. Cheney and Rove are in charge, anyway.

26. Could it just be lack of sleep?
They have probably kept him up past his sundown bedtime, and then forced him to attend early morning meetings.

4. Great Idea Herr Gurner
Maybe most of these people have to EARN PAYCHECKS to PAY BILLS, I know that may sound like a foreign language to you having never had to do that..

Dear Mr pResident,

Shut the fuck UP. Now. Zip it. Don't you have some fleecing of Americans you could be doing? Do it quietly - oh yeah, Cheney's in the hospital and Rove is in North Dakota, so you don't know how to get away with anything..

Did Rove leave you instructions for this speach on the back of a bar napkin while he was gone?

Once more, Shut the piehole, you.

10. He was given the message to deliver by
the mayor of Galveston and the dem mayor of Houston.

* delivered the message given to him by a black dem mayor. Perhaps the black dem mayor is ignorant of the fact that people need to earn money? Or just maybe he knows what's going on in his city and wants to avoid the kind of chaos he watched last Thursday?

The current plan: NW Houston comes back today; SW Houston, Monday; E Houston, Tuesday. With some people asked to return earlier, those that don't need to be back early are asked to come back later.

No schools in session until Thursday, I think; universities open on Tuesday or Wednesday. Private businesses are beginning to open, as staff arrive, but on restricted hours; more to be open tomorrow, as staff allows. Half the city (or so) never left.

6. Going from totally disengaged to micromanaging
the situation, as though he were a city manager, doth not a president make.
Bush's chimpterism has been revealed for all - even the most disconnected-to see. His only option is to try to ameliorate the damage so that the remaining monsters can continue to rape America.

11. The Houston city government, at a press conference
yesterday, issued the same instructions. They were Houston's instructions, and effort to avoid problems.

A reporter asked how those outside the Houston area would hear those instructions. The answer was, We've relayed the information to the White House for President Bush to deliver as part of his comments. He did so: let's bash him for saying what a black dem mayor asked him to say.

19. I stand corrected.
I haven't actually seen him, and avoid the Houston Chronicle. Some jpegs I just found show you're right.

Comments on DU led me to believe he was black. That's what I get for not fact-checking, and it's too late to edit what I posted.

28. Our last mayor was black...but he was a Democrat, too.
Only the Winter brothers are whiter than our current mayor!

He's a mild-mannered guy--but makes Bush look really bad.

The Chronicle does have useful information at times. (Perhaps you could use Bugmenot to avoid registering.)

14. Born in Connecticut, raised in Texas
Listen, friend, it gives me no great thrill to correct your statement. But the sad truth is, that most of us on either side of the aisle really do consider 43 a Texan. His daddy, was a Connecticut Yankee. He's not.

24. Shrub was raised in the north
Sorry, but it's the simple truth - he was born in Connecticut and was educated in Yankee prep schools. He spent "a few weeks a year" in Midland, Texas in his youth - he spent about that much time in Scotland, too, but I don't see anybody calling him a Scot.

His accent is as fake as his election(s).

32. well, I know people who remember his youth in Midland
and they would give you a real battle over your interpretation of fact.

Sorry, I'm a Texan - and think that Georgie is one, too.

So do the majority of we Texans.

And frankly, I don't see why you think geography is so important.

Is your point that we Texans are gullible, stupid? Is that really the statement you would like to make to a state with as many electoral votes as we have?

Seems to me the wise thing would be to win over these voters - not belittle them.

You see what I'm saying here?

30. Why does his "Texas" accent come & go?
You haven't corrected any statements. You've just given your own opinion.

Plenty of non-Texans have done good for our state & are welcome. Bush Jr did squat as Governor & keeps doing worse.

He did live in Houston a couple of years--attending Kinkaid until Andover let him in & attending (a few) Guard meetings at Ellington. But any Gulf Coast resident knew that New Orleans was in serious trouble before Katrina struck.

33. Hell, baby my accent comes and goes
the majority of people that don't know are surprised to learn that I'm a native.

It's like slang we use to "talk" to each other - when appropriate.

Again, I don't see why this bone is so tightly held. It's not about his "raising".

It's about changing the future.

You certainly won't win any friends in my neighborhood by hanging on to this battle.

And we have the electoral votes to make a real difference, don't we?

So I'm suggesting that this rather foolish point die - think win - not whine.
