House rejects naming post office after Berkeley activist
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/09/27/state/n175626D92.DTL

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- House Republicans on Tuesday rejected a Democratic resolution to name a post office in Berkeley, Calif., after a longtime local activist and city councilwoman, saying 94-year-old Maudelle Shirek doesn't represent American values.

The 215-190 vote was an unusual refusal of an honor that's normally routine. House rules allow lawmakers to propose renaming post offices in their district, and fellow lawmakers usually agree without debate.

But Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, who led the opposition, said Shirek's background "sets her apart from, I will say, the most consistent of American values."

King gave no details in a speech on the House floor beyond citing Shirek's support for freeing Mumia Abu-Jamal, convicted for the 1981 murder of a Philadelphia police officer. In an interview later he said Shirek had an "affiliation with the Communist Party," citing her sponsorship of a Marxist library.

1. It's freaking Berkeley!
Its only appropriate to name the post office after her if she's an important part of the community. These motherfuckers are totally whacked.

4. Oh gosh we already got an Airport after the old boy ...
That's one "tell" between the Democrats and Republicans who converse in the slug lines on the beltway.

The Republicans pronounce the full, "Reagan National Airport," while us Democrats ALWAYS just say "NATIONAL Airport."

We don't need no more stinking stuff named after the guy who started the corporate take-over of our beloved Government. Nope, no way!

9. Agreed that the idea of freeing Abu-Jamal is ludicrous
As that individual is 100% guilty.

But supporting that killer's release is probably just an elderly mistake on the part of Shirek, hardly the sum of her entire life.

Steve King's praise of Joseph McCarthy as "an American hero" tells me all I ever need to know about him. Moran.

11. Hrmm.. perhaps these so called "American Values" are TOTALLY FUCKED
"American Values" is one of those Republican code words like "family values" that they use to manipulate people into thinking Republicans must be good - I mean only good people are "for" America and families so Republicans must be good too right? Evil bastards.
