Interior Secy Says US Will Push Search for Energy (ANWAR, coastal waters)

NYT: Interior Secretary Says U.S. Will Push Search for Energy
By FELICITY BARRINGER
Published: September 28, 2005

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 - Interior Secretary Gale A. Norton said Tuesday that after the two destructive gulf hurricanes that battered the nation's energy heartland, the Bush administration would intensify its push to expand energy development on public lands including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in the nation's coastal waters.

"The vulnerability of having all the energy supplies and refining and processing capacity in one geographic area reinforces the idea that we need diversity of supply," Ms. Norton said in an interview.

Citing government reports on the increasing demand for petroleum and natural gas and the sustained high prices that tend to result, she said, "The hurricanes have brought more attention to the fundamental issue."

While Ms. Norton took no position on a Congressional proposal to end a 25-year moratorium on oil leases on the outer continental shelf and to eliminate internal departmental appeals of administration decisions to lease public lands, she did not reject its approach.

She said she had read only a two-page summary of the measure, which is before the House Resources Committee, but she was open to the idea of alternative energy development on public lands....

1. Yep, let's just keep screwing the environment and don't put any effort
into clean, nonpolluting, renewable energy resources.

2. When you say "coastal waters" you mean 9th ward NOLA?
Lord knows how much oil may be sitting in that poor neighborhood. Realtors are already biting for that land. We'll see.

3. ...and so the oil co's win again.
They push this through, gas goes back down a little, and the sheeple are pacified once again.

6. President Eisenhower set aside all of ANWR for protection
for its natural beauty and remoteness. Leave the fossil fuels alone and go for other sources. I'm tired of feeding big oil buddies our income.

7. They're out of their minds. They try this given Iraq and Katrina
and you're going to have people pulling up bricks from streets and throwing them at Presidential motorcades.

The GOP is just about toast now. New drilling in ANWAR and in coastal areas like California would just cement it. The country was already at the tipping point before Katrina. Katrina blew it over to our side.

We should oppose this kind of thing with all the steam we can muster.

10. Agreed.
The last thing we should do is to allow further dependence on W's oil buddies.

14. It's true...I honestly think they're not going to get any of this shit..

..they're talking about - from Social Security, Federal involvement in police action, "Operation Offset." It's all BS, and people know it.

If they think the march in DC last week was something (or even if they don't), they cannot even imagine the wrath of the American people that can come down on their heads.

18. They won't even have to pull the bricks up
There's a million laying loose among the debris down South. I sure hope you're right. I keep thinking "ok, this will be the last straw". I hope the real outrage is coming.

19. That would be true
except you forgot about the top secret, non verifiable paper trail "voting" machines controlled by some VERY scary rightwing extremists. I'm beginning to think I've finally got them figured out. Steal the elections again next year and have the new military powers in place when the People rise up against these fascists. This new power grab by our illegal regime must NOT be allowed to take place or the future is going to be VERY bloody!

8. We need to get off of oil!
We are a nation of oil addicts being strung along by Bush, Cheney and their oil buddies. They effectively have us held hostage. We could SOLVE our energy problems if that's really what those in power wanted. Just look at this:

HEMP FOR FUEL

"About 6% of contiguous United States land area put into cultivation for biomass could supply all current demands for oil and gas." (and employ farmers instead of subsidizing them.)

Read all about it:

11. Alternate forms of energy, not alternate places.
But we already knew these asshats didn't give a shit about any alternative to black gold.

12. I find Secretary Norton's remarks interesting.
Here we have a lady, charged with stewardship over our parks and public lands, advocating opening them up for heavy industrial development as if she were our Energy Secretary.

Diversifying our oil supply by digging in ANWAR is only the latest rationale for eliminating what little prisine country we have left.
The oil industry's claims for clean drilling and little environmental impact are about as credible as Bush's justification for war in Iraq. That industry did a bang up job destroying Louisiana's coastal wetlands. Why should we believe they would treat Alaska any differently. Ms. Norton has once again shown herself to be simply an industry stooge with zero regard for this country's long range interests.

16. I remember him...
Famous for the quote: "Let Reagan be Reagan".

He was indicted, if I recall correctly. Did he ever do any time?

we remember the Santa Barbra oil spill in the '60s...absolutely no way. We secede first. Bastards.
