Indonesia Braces for Petrol Protests
Indonesia braces for petrol protests
September 28, 2005 - 4:29PM

Big protests are feared across Indonesia in coming days after parliament approved cuts to government fuel subsidies that will push up petrol prices this weekend.

The government and the international financial experts say the state subsidies are sending the country broke.

As motorist queued for up to two days to fill tanks in a panic-buying spree ahead of a Saturday price rise, Indonesia's parliament ended days of wrangling and agreed to cap generous fuel subsidies at 89.2 trillion rupiah, or $A11.5 billion.
