WASHINGTON - The government is investigating five reports of teenagers who came down with a serious neurological disorder after receiving a new vaccine against meningitis.

Doctors don't yet know whether the cases of Guillain Barre syndrome are related to the shot, called Menactra, or are coincidence, the Food and Drug Administration emphasized Friday.

The government recommends the vaccine for adolescents and college freshmen living in dormitories, and FDA said there was no reason to change that advice — but it alerted the public as a precaution.

Menactra protects against rare but devastating cases of bacterial meningitis. The shot is particularly targeted to college students, because close contact is the biggest risk factor for its spread. While there are fewer than 3,000 cases of invasive meningococcal meningitis each year, and 300 deaths, people ages 15 to 24 have the highest mortality rates, and survivors can suffer mental disabilities, hearing loss and paralysis.

Menactra is a new vaccine approved last January; an older meningitis vaccine is available, too, but doesn't provide as much protection.

2. Shit. I just allowed my 16 year old daughter to get vaccinated with one

of these. How worried should I be?

3. May not be related, but even if is--extremely rare...

Even though new, this vaccine has already been given to tens of thousands (if not more overseas during pre-licensure testing)and a couple of million people since release.

So, I'd be aware, but not overly concerned. Meningococcal meningitis is a truly deadly and horrendous disease for those who survive. So, right now your decision to vaccinate would seem the prudent one.

6. I decided against it given OUR experience with vaccines.

My daughter just entered college as a freshman-
They recommend but don't require the vaccine.

When I called the student health center to learn more,
they told me a bout the two vaccines available.
I immediately said NO WAY to the newer one and
upon learning that they had never had an outbreak
in her student population, decided we would take our
chances.

I do NOT trust the FDA when they have been
bought and sold by the pharma cartel.

My daughter almost died after a DPT shot and had I listened to the
pediatrician and not taken her to the emergency room
on my own, she would not be here today.

brain damage.

I work in my local schools with secial needs kids-
I can not TELL you how many of the parents tell
me that they link their childrens various conditions
first appearing within hours of a DPT vaccine.

One beautiful child I work with had the identical
symptoms as my daughter after a DPT.
The fever caused permanent brain damage-
My daughter actually stopped breathing after hours
of the fever. I kept calling the doctor who was extremely
dismissive of me. I finally gave up on him and drove
my baby to the local ER.
She stopped breathing an hour after they
shuffled us off to waiting room- THEN, and ONLY then
did they pay any attention to us.
Suddenly there were twenty medical people
on the scene....
The span between the vaccination and when her
breathing stopped?
6 hours.
Parents need to listen to their instinct, not
some pompous assed doctor after a DPT vaccine.
The ADR reports on this vaccine are completely
covered up- interferes with the profits of
vaccinations for every child born in the US.

10. I hear you loud and clear. I have filed ADRs with

the FDA and other agencies in regard to friends who had severe reactions from flu shots,to some animal vaccines for my own animals and animals of friends. when the docs and vets don't do it, these damned reactions never get reported and everyonew just sits around and says these vaccines are fine. Well, some of them are, I am sure, but a lot aren't. A lot of people have no idea they can file their own reports. It makes me wonder what the ADR real numbers are on these vaccines. We need to turn to the French model, where the doctors are required to report this stuff, versus the voluntary system we have going in this country.

Personally I am fed up with rabies vaccines and the state requirements for indoor only animals. I have seen 2 of my cats nearly die from that damned vaccine. Totally healthy 3 year old cats going into cardiac arrest about 3 hours after the shot and temperature jumping from 99 degrees to 104 in the same time period. Then spending over a thousand bucks at the ER vets and praying your pet doesn't die.

Watching your little baby stop breathing...again I hear you, boy do I ever. It is the WORST thing, just the worst thing

I watched that in one of my cats 2 years ago as I was speeding to an ER vet and I was speeding so much I nearly got myself killed . Very rapid breathing and then full stop. The vet pulled him out of the carrier and said he's dead, but then decided to give CPR and a shot of something while I was standing there screaming. He somehow started breathing again.

People who are very pro-vaccine usually never saw any adverse reactions
