Breaking: Blasts rock Bali's tourist area
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 07:38 AM by Cooley Hurd
http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/at-least-three-hurt-in-bali-explosion/2005/10/01/1127804697690.html

Explosions in a popular tourist area of Bali have injured at least three Western tourists and damaged buildings.

The blasts occurred along Jimbaran beach and in Kuta Square.

The area has been cordoned off and staff from nearby businesses told to leave the area, witnesses say.

A restaurant and neighbouring shop were damaged in one blast.

There is no confirmation of what caused the explosions, nor how many people were injured.

2. i think the terrorists are beginning to see that they hurt the west more
by destroying buildings and recreational locals. They what the hurricanes did to the US. The loss of life was horrible but they witnessed that America seems to care more about "property" than people. I sure hope there were not many deaths in these latest bombings. I think Americans should just come on home wherever they are. We are not liked or respected in the world anymore.

27. approx 7 million Americans living overseas
Most of us ain't in the military, "anti-terra" etc. Many of us consider ourselves citizens of the globe. If anything more Americans should get out of their isolated cave, and see a bit of the world themselves. A broader worldview would surely encourage, even the sheeple, to vote for better policy.

4. Just when I was thinking about going back
This is truly one of my favorite places on Earth and it saddens me to see such trouble befall it. As usual, all of the trouble comes from people from Jakarta or Sumatra.

I hope the government cracks down on these fanatics in Indonesia!

one good thing about fanatics; they need a reason to go nuts...take away the reason and they generally return to humdrum 9 to 5 lifestyle

7. CNN: Explosions reported on Bali (3 blasts)
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Explosions went off Saturday in two tourist areas of the Indonesian resort island Bali, injuring at least three foreigners, police and Indonesian media reported.

At least three blasts went off on Jimbaran beach, which is lined with seafood restaurants frequented by tourists, El Shinta radio reported, adding that witnesses saw at least three bloodied foreigners leaving the scene.

"It's very crowded, people are still being evacuated," one witness told Metro TV, adding that an explosion was close to the Four Seasons Hotel, which sits on the bay.

Another near-simultaneous explosion hit a shopping center in downtown Kuta, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) away, El Shinta said.

Bali police spokesman Lt. Col. Antonius Reniban could not say if they were bombs

9. Kuta square is very crowded, casualties could obviously be higher than 3
The last bombing was a disaster for locals too as nearly all could not work and many lost everything. This may end up changing the bali experience big-time.

11. I believe this is the aim of the perpetrators.
After the first attack two years ago, my husband was told by
somebody who works for the Dept. of Foreign Affairs that it was
aimed at the Balinese because they are Hindu, and the purpose was
to destroy the tourist trade, although John Howard had no scruples
about playing on the fact that so many of the tourists were
Australian. I'm sure he'll use it again to shore up support for
his draconian new anti-terrorism legislation.

21. I think it is less about the Balinese people than the government
The fact that they are Hindu spares the terrorists from killing Muslims but the real aim is the government.

Twelve dead as Bali hit by blasts

At least 12 people have been killed in a series of explosions on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

Many others were reported to have been injured in the blasts at Kuta beach - the area most popular with Western tourists - and at Jimbaran beach.

There is no firm word yet on what caused the blasts which happened just before 2000 local time (1200 GMT).

Nearly three years ago, 202 people died in nightclub bomb attacks in Kuta that were blamed on Islamic extremists.

More evidence of of success in the neocons' idea of a war on terror.

23. Guess these terrorists
didn't get the Bush memo about reporting to Iraq along with all the other terorists since that's where we are fighting them.

I swear that "Fight them there, so we don't have to fight them here." is one of the dumbest pieces of doubletalk I have heard.

19. Al-Qaeda blamed for Bali blast
Bombs exploded almost simultaneously Saturday in two tourist areas of the Indonesian resort island of Bali, killing at least 23 people and wounding at least 51 others, police and hospital officials said.

The victims included foreign tourists.

The blasts at Jimbaran beach and a bustling outdoor shopping center in downtown Kuta "were clearly the work of terrorists," police Maj. Gen. Ansyaad Mbai, a top Indonesian anti-terrorism official, told The Associated Press. Al-Qaeda-linked militants were suspected, a Jakarta-based security analyst said.

Putu Putra Wisada, spokesman at the Sangla Hospital in Denpasar, said 11 dead were taken to the hospital and 38 others were admitted with injuries - eight Australians, two Americans and 28 Indonesians. A receptionist at the Graha Asih Hospital close to Jimbaran Bay said at least eight bodies were in the morgue, and doctors were treating at least 13 other people.

26. Horror Returns to Bali: Dozens Die ...Bombs hit tourist resorts
Horror returns to Bali: Dozens die as al-Qa'ida bombs hit tourist resorts

By David Randall in London, and Jan McGirk South-east Asia Correspondent

Published: 02 October 2005

At least 25 people were killed and more than 100 injured when bombs suspected to have been planted by an al-Qa'ida-linked terror group ripped through two tourist resorts in Bali, Indonesia, yesterday. The victims included Western holidaymakers.

The President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, confirmed that terrorists were to blame and warned that more attacks were possible. Only last month he had warned that the al-Qa'ida-linked militant group Jemaah Islamiyah would strike again.

The attacks came almost exactly three years after what were known - until yesterday, at least - as the Bali Bombings. Then, on another dreadful October Saturday, two bombs exploded in the tourist area of Kuta, killing 202 people, 26 of them Britons. One wrecked Paddy's Irish Bar, the other exploded in a van outside the Sari nightclub.

Yesterday, just three blocks away from there, bombers struck again, planting at least one bomb in the three-storey Raja noodle and steak house. Smoke poured from the building, which was badly damaged. The bomb apparently went off on the second floor of the restaurant, said a witness, who saw three bodies and at least five wounded.
