Hackett to Challenge DeWine for Senate

Hackett to Challenge DeWine for Senate

By DAVID HAMMER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Paul Hackett, the Iraq War veteran from Cincinnati who was hailed by national Democrats for his narrow loss this summer in a heavily Republican House district, has decided to challenge Mike DeWine for U.S. Senate in 2006.

Spokesman David Woodruff, who served as Hackett's campaign manager in his special election campaign for the 2nd District House seat against Jean Schmidt, confirmed Hackett's run Monday evening. Hackett had spent the last month hinting at a run against Ohio's senior senator, who is in his second six-year term.

Hackett was flying back Monday evening from Washington after meeting with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Woodruff said.

Reid's spokeswoman, Tessa Hefen, would not confirm or deny the meeting Monday, but Woodruff later said Reid gave Hackett the confidence to run.

"He found overwhelming support from the leaders of the Democratic Party, campaign organizations and staff," Woodruff said.

4. Does he have enough support to win the primary?
I'm guessing he'll be up against several Dem legislators with solid blocks of support before he gets to DeWine.

16. I don't think there'll be challengers, the Ohio leadership wanted Hackett.

I think they want to clear the way early for a strong campaign and big win for Hackett. I'm a New Yorker, but I love Hackett and am very excited about this race.

5. He's a campaign veteran, now!
Rummaging around for anything helpful on Paul Hacket, I stumbled across this article written during his campaign for Congress in Ohio. (Sure hope someone has found a way to make those Diebold machines accountable by the next election.)

OH-2: Swift Boating of Hackett Into High Gear
Posted by Tim Tagaris
Eric Minameyer, an advisor to Jean Schmidt, was just the beginning of the "swift boating" of Paul Hackett in what appears to be a coordinated effort by her campaign. Upon arriving at Hackett HQ this morning to take some photos and videos, I was shocked to hear that the deplorable tactics have been taken to a new level in the past 24 hours.

1.) A local conservaitve radio host started by questioning Paul Hackett's service to country. Scott Sloan of WLW 700 AM in Cincinnati went off on some insane rant about the real level Paul's patriotism regarding the war in Iraq and claimed Hackett was using his service for "political purposes."

Over the past two days, Republicans have been calling into talk radio across the district saying things like, "Paul wasn't really a Marine Corps Major in Iraq." It's a coordinated effort, as I am hearing from people that similar lines are being repeated and repeated by radio callers in and out of the district.

2.) The "swift boating" is picking up steam, and we have to fight back. I sat no less than five feet away from a reporter from a cable news outlet that asked, "Some say that this was all a plan on your part. To go to Iraq and come back with this great story while running for congress."

15. Unless he gets smarter or braver, I'll reserve my support ...

... the second time around. There is a great deal to be happy about with Paul Hackett as a candidate, but his sluggishness and unwillingness to prepare for and deal with what appears to have been obvious election fraud in his House race -- or even to give DUers who compiled that evidence and made Goddamn sure that he received it -- never got so much as a peep from Paul.

That's bullshit -- anyone running for office in Ohio better be expecting fraud. We've got to find candidates who will acknowledge and fight fraud. Otherwise, it's a penny-whistle against a fog-horn.

So support Hackett and I hope he wins. But while you're supporting him, remind him (over and over and over and over ...) that it's live free or Diebold in Ohio -- and everywhere else. Peace out.

17. DeWine is going to opt to run for Governor I bet
Knowing that the repuke party is flailing in the state with a 17% approval for their own Gov. Taft, I can see DeWine annoucing his 'retirement' from the Senate and opting instead to run for Governor.

19. Forget it,Hackett has no chance now-Rove endorses DeWine
Ohio GOP, Rove endorse DeWine for re-election

WASHINGTON - The Ohio Republican Party voted unanimously Friday to endorse Sen. Mike DeWine's re-election campaign after getting a phone call from White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove.
"We want to do everything we can to get this good man back in here," Rove told the party's executive committee, according to a news release from the party.

"He is a loyal stalwart," Rove said. "He's voted for our judges. He's supported our budgets. He's supported our tax cuts. He's supported our education reforms. He supported the Patriot Act. He supported legal reform. This guy has been a loyal and strong supporter of the president."

Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett said DeWine "has a long and distinguished record of accomplishment for the people of Ohio and he's earned our endorsement."

DeWine, R-Cedarville, is running for his third six-year term in the Senate next year...

20. I already emailed my offer of time to volunteer and my house for fund
raising. I resigned from activity with the OH dems over their lack of leadership, but am willing to work my butt off for a Dem who speaks his mind!
