Six Democratic War Vets Seek House Seats
By KIMBERLY HEFLING, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Lawyer Patrick Murphy and five other veterans of the Iraq war are asking questions about President Bush's policies in Iraq as part of their broader Democratic campaigns to win congressional seats in next year's elections.

Given their experience in Iraq, the six Democrats in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia say they are eminently qualified to pose the tough questions. Their reservations mirror public opinion, with an increasing number of Americans expressing concern about the mission and favoring a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops.

The most recent Associated Press-Ipsos poll showed only 37 percent of Americans approve of Bush's handling of Iraq, with 62 percent disapproving.

This summer, Democrat Paul Hackett, an Iraq war veteran, nearly defeated Republican Jean Schmidt in a special election in an Ohio district considered a GOP stronghold. Hackett focused on his wartime experience and his opposition to Bush's policies.

1. I wonder...
...how many Iraq war vets will come back and run for office as Republicans. I'm guessing approximately zero.

Aren't you concerned about losing his house seat to Republicans if he runs for Senate?

14. there's always at least one
moron that will show up with his legs blown out, complain about how his veterans payments have been cut, but then say he wishes he could go back to Iraq and then announced his candidacy for the Republican party.

There are morons in the soldiers ranks too...they're not immune to that.

38. There'll be some. There's an anti-Sheehan war mom, deluded as she is.
I'm afraid a certain segment of military folk, as in the civilian sector, will be unalterably, unshakably Rethuglican, no matter how bad it gets or how absurd their commander-in-chief. It's like, a genetic defect, or something, for some people to hang out with idiots, under all circumstances.

12. Hackett would be better to run for Governor of Ohio
so that come 2008 or 2012 he can run for Prez as a governor (since winning the office of President from the Senate does not work really well).

Let Strickland, Brown and Coleman work the rest of the details out. Just about anyone with enough dough can beat DeWine right now if played right.

16. Not governor
That job requires much more experience in day to day running of government. With a state government that has been completely controlled by R's for the last 12 yrs or so, we need a Dem who can come in and rebuild state government from the ground up, instead of having to rely on the old Voinovich appointments to keep running things.

Strickland will be a great governor and Hackett will do well as a senator.

21. I just hate to sacrifice Hackett when in a few years, he would be
so great to run for President. That, in recent history, has been much easier to do and win as a governor, rather than a senator.

And, I do not think experience is a pre-requisite for political positions...Taft was around for a long time, and he has a miserable track record as an "experienced" person. As long as Hackett surrounds himself with knowledgeable folk and advisors/cabinet, he could do well as Governor.

45. Hey Corzine looks to be making the Senate/Governor transition!
in New Jersey... Why can't Hackett do it later from the Senate as well when the time is right.

A little early to see if he's presidential material yet.

This poll shows him taking the Ohio Senate seat too from the WSJ now.

5. This is sooooo good! Makes up for the lack of coverage of Iraq Vets
at the protests last weekend. Well, guess there was lack of coverage overall, but there were TONS of Iraq vets there and they should havve been headlines everywhere. THIS cannot be ignored!

These are the people who have been 'over there' and whose side are they on? Hmmmmm....How can this be a left-wing conspiracy? How can they spin this? Thet can try, but the US will see thru it.

WE ARE TAKING OUR COUNTRY BACK! WE ARE TAKING OUR FLAG BACK! WE ARE THE MAJORITY!!!!

6. I like the way he thinks!
"I'm not anti-war, I'm anti-failure," Lentz said. "We need to define what victory is and we need to set a plan to get there. You cannot stay the course if you do not set a course."

Perfect way to frame this!

DeWine is vulnerable as are all Ohio repigs who are seen as part of the status quo, which basically sucks. DeWine is a do-nothing milquetoast, not necessarily directly responsible for the scandals, but guilty by association and inaction.

GO HACKETT!!!

I believe that Paul Hackett will skate into the U.S. Senate next year. I predict that it will be a landslide for him in Ohio and will rock the entire nation in its political significance.

I salute Paul Hackett.

18. TEXAS reporting for duty..........................
At this point we have THREE candidates taking on Repuke incumbents.

6th - In the 6th, going up against "Smoky Joe" Barton, we have Captain David Harris, an Iraq vet and strong Democratic activist.

He's just getting his website up. http://www.followmetodc.com/

7th - In the 7th, David Murff will be challenging DeLay's little itty bitty brown-nosed buddy, John Culberson. Murff is a family and criminal law attorney in private practice; he served in the U.S. Army, 2nd Armored, 1st Brigade, Fort Hood.

His website is still being developed. http://www.murff4congress.com/

31st - In the 31st, we have Mary Beth Harrell, taking on John Carter. She's not a vet, but is married to a retired vet and has two sons currently on active-duty.

Her website is http://marybethharrellforcongress.com/html/biography/

I've heard rumors of two more Texas vets ready to go, but no first hand knowledge.

41. Not very impressed with Tim
Wife and I went to listen to him speak a couple of weeks ago at Democratice Women of Meck. county. Even though we are in Mel Watt's district I was ready to write him a check if it would help get rid of Robin Hayes. Anyway he was doing a question and answer and it came out that he was not pro choice and was not for gay marriage. Needless to say we left with our checkbook remaining in my wife's purse. Don't know that he is the answer (Guess any dem would be better than Hayes)

48. I saw your post there.
I would like to know more about where Dunn stands on issues other than Iraq and CAFTA. My impression is that those will be his main campaign issues.

I also don't know that much about the demographics of his district, other than registrations are pretty evenly split between dem and rep. From a map I saw, it looked like a slice of strongly democratic North Charlotte, Cabbarrus County, which I think is sub/exurban and wingnutty rep, a few rural, majority Black counties and a bunch of area that I don't know at all. It may be that the area is socially conservative, but will respond to a message of economic justice.

I am pro-choice. But I think you can be against abortion and still be a good dem. If you support economic and societal change the will decrease abortion, instead of punitive, legal measures that don't appear to have any actual effect on the abortion rate, that makes sense to me. Also being consistently "pro-life" in other areas. In other words, being against stuff like capital punishment and optional wars is good in my book. I dunno, Harry Reid is not pro-choice and he seems to be doing OK.

:hide:

The gay marriage issue is harder for me to understand. To me, that is a civil rights issue.

Dunn will be better than Robin Hayes. A voice for economic justice instead of a complete corporatist whore, plus someone with experience in Iraq has *got* to be better.
