Alabama Doubling Number of State Troopers
Alabama Doubling Number of State Troopers

By Associated Press
October 4, 2005, 6:29 AM EDT

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama soon will more than double the number of state troopers that have the authority to arrest illegal immigrants.

Gov. Bob Riley said 25 state troopers will undergo federal immigration law enforcement training at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston.

After completing the five-week training course in mid-November, they will join 21 others who went through the special training in 2003.

Alabama, Florida and Arkansas are the only states that have the authority to use troopers as federal immigration enforcement officers.

2. when people start bitchin' about illegal employers rather than...
illegal immigrants...

and start demanding that those illegal employers are fined into bankruptcy and thrown in prison...

and start deriding illegal employers for destroying "our" economy...

and start "looking down on" anybody that has an illegal employer as a neighbor...

well, then, and only then, will i decide that i really have anything to discuss with those that are all up-in-arms about the "illegal" problem. cause until then, i think that the only people talkin' about it are bigots.

3. Always the response to a bad economy.
People always want to shut down the borders, creating fantasies about their jobs going to an illegal immigrant, or an Affirmative Action hiring, or to Jews in Berlin, or to Germanic Barbarians who have come to Rome for the bread and circuses.

At least Alabama is putting people to work, I guess. Sadly, that in itself may boost the economy a little bit--government spending often does--and convince people that the immigrant crackdown is working. Even more sadly, their focus will be profile stopping. THat's what the training is for. So driving while Hispanic or black will become a more serious offense in Alabama. And as in Iraq, the new hires won't be as well trained, and will have less oversight than the average new hire, and things will get ugly.

Read Grapes of Wrath, or listen to Woody Guthrie's hobo song. "Go to sleep you weary hobo, (something something something something), and when you die and go to heaven, there'll be no policemen there."

5. immigrants know how to cross state borders
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 01:27 PM by Syrinx
And there's a lot of Mexican immigrants in Alabama. Most without green cards. I'm not taking a position on this, just pointing out that you don't know what you are talking about.

10. Yep. Sadly, many DUers don't realized the problem
With tens of thousands of them willing to work for $5.15 an hour (even less under the table), wages are falling in many areas. They have placed an expensive burden on an already underfunded education system. The health care system has an added burden with uninsured patients who have no money.

17. "you don't know what you are talking about"
When did that ever stop anyone from bloviating around here?

For anyone who happens to be interested in facts, here's an interesting piece on Hispanic population growth in Alabama:

With a Hispanic population increase of more than 210%, Alabama ranked seventh among all U.S. states in Hispanic population growth during the 1990s. The Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area contains almost 27% of Alabama's Hispanic population and is a leading U.S. center for the Hispanic population growth and business development.

According to the Brookings Institute, Metropolitan Birmingham had the sixth fastest Hispanic population growth among all U.S. metropolitan areas during the 1990s. Between 1990 and 2000, the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area experienced a Hispanic population increase of 348%.

14. It's paranoia with a racist twist.
The real border states have a better grasp of the facts.

I guess Alabama has no better way to spend their money.

7. I am a 58 year old lifelong Democrat
Who visits DU daily and occasionally posts something. I am a Disabled Vietnam Veteran, was a protester against that war, have backed all human rights legislation. I have kept myself knowledgeable on what our elected government was up to since 1968. I live in Alabama. The post referring to ala fucn bama was a bit small minded for me and I hope the individual who posted it is not going to be representative of the Democratic Party. I shall now make my last post and my last visit to DU because of that post

21. RW disruptors use DU as a way to alienate Democrats
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 04:09 PM by brentspeak
They pose as extreme left-wingers, bad mouth the people in Red states, then watch as the Red staters depart angrily. Sometimes, they also try to stir the pot against Democratic politicians. They've been getting away with it on these boards forever.

Of course, every now and then there is a genuine extreme left-winger who enjoys alienating our Red state brethren and stirring the pot. They also seem to get away with their antics.

Though, I don't know who it was who pi$$ed off the other poster, or exactly what he or she said, because of deleted posts.

24. I wasn't
I don't even know who said what, or exactly what was said (there's a bunch of deleted posts in this thread). I was responding to someone else's post who was pi$$ed off at some apparently disparaging comments aimed at Alabama. This phenomonom happens way too often on DU.
I've read your posts in other threads. I'd hardly call you a RW disruptor. I assumed the commotion was centered on someone else, whoever it was who had their posts pulled.

28. So they will have 46 troopers chasing down tens of thousands...
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 05:53 PM by teryang
...or is it hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants waltz in and out of court every day in Florida for petty crimes. Nobody does anything. The rethugs plan is to swamp the country with foreign labor including illegal labor and then have reforms and amnesty bills to crush wage levels and working conditions in the US. Guess what? It worked. This is a fig leaf.
