Tropical Storm Tammy formed off the Central Florida coast this morning, with warnings issued from Cocoa Beach to South Santee River in South Carolina.
The National Hurricane Center said at 7:30 a.m. that the center of the storm was about 20 miles east of Cape Canaveral and moving to the north-northwest about 16 mph. The maximum sustained winds were about 40 mph.
A large area of coastline along Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina was being threatened by Tammy because it was unclear to forecasters where the storm will touch land.

5. Yeah but I don't even want to have to THINK about it! |
|
Seriously, have you heard how 30 miles inland in LA and Miss did? Not well at all. Roofs all over the place. I just don't know what I'd do if a Cat 4 headed up through St. Marks. I'd never get my husband to leave and he live in a forest of enormous pines. And after the FEMA performance I'm not likely to head for the nearest shelter and die of thirst.
This is getting old. So am I!

21. Try 100 miles inland and in Texas |
|
I know it isn't making the news like the areas hit by Katrina, but we've got a ton of damage down here, with some of the hardest hit areas 70-80 miles inland. Trees were felled even in Lufkin and Nacogdoches, towns in which shelters were set up for people from evacuating Beaumont and Port Arthur. I think Lufkin is probably about 130 miles inland, and Nac is about 15 miles north of it.
You're right that you don't want this. And FEMA hasn't performed much better down here than they did in the Katrina hit areas.

7. Keep an eye on the storm & you'll probably be OK. |
|
A co-worker took her family to DisneyWorld while a (small) hurricane was sweeping through another part of Florida. Since they're Gulf Coasters, she & her husband determined they were far from danger.
A "band" of the storm came through with rain & a bit of breeze, making many parkgoers flee in terror. Then the sun reappeared. Apparently DisneyWorld is lots of fun when there are NO lines for the rides.

8. Yea I hope it does empty the park. |
|
But my luck lately has not been good. I'm probably going to get drenched.
Just to show you my luck, I live in S.W. Florida & we are under a flood watch right now. Maybe I am safer in Orlando.

11. Have fun in Disney, but DO keep an eye on the weather. |
|
If it's just raining, rides may not shut down. We were just there the week before Katrina hit. It was a blast. We just put our ponchos on and sloshed thru the water. At times, it was only our family and cast members on the walkways. Everyone else was hold up in eateries or shops. Even the shows weren't crowded.

20. We were at Disney during Dennis |
|
earlier this year. It wasn't a problem. Orlando is pretty prepared for rain. As long as all you get is rain and a little wind, you can enjoy the parks. Some people say it's even better, because the lines are shorter.

|
up here in No FL. We've had some wind but I live on a lake so it gets windier here anyway. Right now there's just a light breeze and it's actually cool.

|
I live in Fl. right now. Just my personal opinion but I am really tired of living with hurricanes and storm threats every year. Being afraid of them, getting ready for them, sitting through them, clearing out on occasion, etc. I hate it. Some people, it's not a problem for them, nobody likes it but they prepare and that's it. There could be bad weather anywhere, but I'd rather deal with the bad weather I was already used to than this.
