"Jack Carter, the son of former President Carter, said Tuesday he plans to run against John Ensign for the U.S. Senate next year.

Carter, 58, and his wife, Elizabeth, have lived in Las Vegas since 2003, operating the investment consulting firm Carter Global.

"I'm very seriously exploring it," Carter said in an interview Tuesday. "I had not planned to run for office. I have no infrastructure and this is new to me."

Carter said he decided to run in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He said he was offended by the federal government's response to the disaster."

Folks, with Jack Carter it looks like we may have a race in Nevada after all.

43. For the record,
John William "Jack" Carter was born in 1947, James Earl "Chip" Carter III was born in 1950, and Donnel Jeffrey "Jeff" Carter was born in 1952.

God, how time flies.

9. this is good.

I'd hoped one of the two Democratic candidates for governor would shift over, but this is a good start too.

Ensign starts off with a 52-55% ceiling but should be getting dragged down by Bush support in Nevada running under 40% and the Republican Congress even worse. It could be good fun to see how he tries to shake his record of being a lockstep Republican vote or tries to defend it come next spring and next summer.

I'm worried about the Vegas casino owners, though. They've slightly preferred Democrats on a national level (the concern being persistent 'Christian' efforts to restrict legalized gambling and other soft vices) and have apparently ended up buying themselves national Republican protection- which certainly didn't come cheaply and chafes them. But running Las Vegas as the massive plantation they do, i.e. cheap labor market they control fully, means they'll resist Democrats getting enough solid hold in the state to take control of state government. That means Harry Reid and other upper level Democrats in the state will have to cut a bunch of backroom deals that folks like us will not like and will be extremely sensitive to fluctuations in partisan support in the state. The other power to watch is the LDS and their Christian Right comrades-in-arms.

13. Won't that Yucca Mountain biz work for Jack's favor, too?
If he can pick and choose his issues (all politics IS local, after all) at least we will have a vote when we need to enforce party discipline. Hell, I'll donate to his campaign, because I know he was RAISED right!!!

20. The LDS has some clout; however,
the "Christian right" is almost negligible in this state. Nevada has one of the lowest church attendance rates (if not the lowest) in the country.

I think they had 4 kids. Here's a link to to a local Radio program, "Conversations at the Carter Center." They are asked about and talk about "How their kids are doin'" near the end of this program. They describe Jack, but didn't mention this new announcement.

40. Son Of Former President Jimmy Carter May Run For Nevada Senate Seat
Jack Carter, son of former President Carter, says he's considering a run against U.S. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., in 2006.

"I'm very seriously exploring it," Carter said Tuesday. "I had not planned to run for office. I have no infrastructure and this is new to me."

Carter, 58, and his wife, Elizabeth, have lived in Las Vegas since 2003, operating an investment consulting firm. He said he began looking at the Senate race after Hurricane Katrina, adding he was offended by the federal government's response to the disaster.

"I'm more concerned than ever with the way that the country is headed," said Carter, terming himself a social liberal with conservative Southern roots and a business background that taught him that "you pay for what you spend."
