Congress Seeks to Slash Food Aid for Poor
Congress Seeks to Slash Food Aid for Poor
By LIBBY QUAID, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, October 5, 2005

(10-05) 08:09 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Under orders to whittle agriculture spending by $3 billion, Republicans in Congress propose to slash food programs for the poor by $574 million and subsidies and conservation programs by $1 billion each, The Associated Press has learned.

The plan by Senate Agriculture Committee chairman Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., would reduce farmers' payments by 2.5 percent across the board, slashing spending by $1.145 billion over five years. That's half the 5 percent the Bush administration sought earlier this year.

The $574 million cut in food stamps would come from restricting access to this benefit for certain families that receive other government assistance. The restriction would shut an estimated 300,000 people out of the program.

1. No, they aren't screwing the poor. They are just streamlining
an inefficient program so that it can better meet the needs of the recipients.

See that's it.

like stealing to get food "to put on their families," they will be able to harvest a whole new segment of the population to feed into the privitized prison system to get busy on prison industrial work. It's a win-win for MEpublicans.

Those who were already below the poverty line and depending on food stamp programs are about to get fucked again..as if Katrina and the lack of response by the Bush Gang wasn't enough...

Bush and the GOP hate people who are what they consider an embarrassment to our nation; Having a Third World population within our borders is something that should just be swept under the rug. :sarcasm:

23. A Modest Proposal...Let them eat children
A few pertinent observations about Swift from the English Department. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

"The conditions Swift describes in "A Modest Proposal" are not hyperbole. Only his Projector's solution exaggerates, and perhaps only a little. The situation continued to deteriorate for another 150 years, during which English landlords exported from Ireland the grain and livestock Irish tenant farmers raised, while the farmers increasingly had to live on a limited range of vegetables, mainly potatoes. In 1845, a previously unknown fungus named Phytophthora infestans attacked the potato crop. For the first two years of the great famine, while England continued to export most other edible crops from Ireland to England, the Irish starved, and even after grain started to flow back into the land, people continued to die of starvation and opportunistic diseases which afflict the malnourished. Those who could not pay rent with crops which would not grow were evicted from their homes, caught cholera, typhus, and typhoid fever in the workhouses, were shipped to Australia, Canada and America by the hundreds of thousands only to die on the ships or shortly after reaching land. An Irish population of eight to nine million souls was reduced to between five and six million. Swift tried to tell them what would happen. Which satirists are we ignoring, to our peril, today? "

Congress Seeks to Slash Food Aid for Poor, Conservation
Skip directly to the full story.

By Libby Quaid Associated Press Writer

Published: Oct 5, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) - Under orders to cut agriculture spending by $3 billion, Republicans in Congress have proposed reducing food programs for the poor by $574 million and conservation programs by $1 billion, The Associated Press has learned.

The proposal by the chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., also would cut payments to farmers by 2.5 percent across the board.

The plan faces hostility from congressional Democrats and other critics who say the cuts would hurt food stamps and conservation programs.

Payments to farmers would fall by $1.145 billion over five years. But that is considerably less severe than what President Bush had proposed. Bush had sought a 5 percent reduction in payments, plus a far-reaching plan for capping payments that would cut billions more dollars from subsidies collected by large farm operations.

simply ignore the old, sick and poor and everything will be great. One of those rw southern congressmen guys was on NPR last night advocating the elimination of Medicare and Social Security, claiming that the country would be better off if everybody would simply take responsibility for themselves.

Essentially, that myopic dobson sounding twit bastard was advocating the violent overthrow of the government by the underclass.

44. HM's (Have Mores) vs. the HN's (Have Nots)...
I Guess the Have Nots may need to bite down even harder on the bullet of poverty in order to help pay for the extreme double dipped tax cuts for HM's.

The radicals in D.C. must (or should) be embarrassed by their old agendas coming into fruition now. Look for the champions of the HM's to back away from proposed cuts (only to save face for the '06 & '08 elections).

But make no mistake -- the HM's are relentless in having their way.

hence the signiture...
