Penn Station Reopened After Terror Threat
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 10:52 AM by DoYouEverWonder
Oct 7, 2005

NEW YORK - As the city responded Friday to a potential terrorist threat in its subways, a section of Penn Station was shut down during the morning rush hour as emergency workers in hazardous materials suits investigated a reported toxic substance left in the Manhattan transit hub.

The unidentified substance was inside a soda can found lying near an ATM and the ticket windows in Penn Station, said Amtrak spokeswoman Marcie Golgoski. The can was removed from the facility for testing by the city Department of Environmental Protection, she said.

The majority of Penn Station was reopened by about 10:45 a.m., more than an hour after it was closed. Police dogs and National Guard members also had been patrolling the station beneath Madison Square Garden due to heightened security conditions.

Golgoski said the substance in the soda can was found to pose no threat to passengers.

So they shut down Penn station for a soda can. People, let's get real. There is nothing that you could put in a soda could be so dangerous that you have to shut down all of Penn Station. This is just ridiculous.

Rolling out the new terra product after August!

excerpt:

What's the political convenience? Strategist Dick Morris spelled it out in a recent column: ``Polls show that only one issue works in Bush's favor: terrorism.''

Does Morris think the president is, as they say, ``wagging the dog'' to divert attention from other issues?

``He doesn't need to wag the dog,'' Morris writes. ``He just needs to talk about wagging it to make the impact to keep control of Congress.''

<snip>

...White House chief of staff Andrew Card told The New York Times last week, ``From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August.''

7. So much Bull Sh*t...
I had a meeting today close to Penn Station, so I jumped on the A train from w 4th st. As I walked down the tunnel, I could see the the train just pulling up so I started to jog knowing that if I didn't catch it I'd be late. As I cleared the tunnel the first thing I saw were two NYPD officers lounging against a railing. You know what the first thing I thought was?

"Should I be worried that they might open fire on me because I'm running towards a crowded subway car with a bag over my shoulder?"

How F*cked up is that, that I'm suddenly worried about being shot by POLICE OFFICERS just because I'm trying to catch a train!! :grr:

Luckily I made it to Penn and to my meeting before they closed it down.

Thanks Bu*h for making America safer!! :sarcasm:

9. Expect to have more 'terror' theats.
Bush needs to raise his popularity polls and there are plenty of people willing to do the job for him by continuing to use the fear tool.

10. Meanwhile, trying to buy ammonium nitrate in OK is not a problem
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 05:33 PM by rainbow4321
Given that this is the second OK kid to have bomb issues (other kid "accidently" brought a pipe bomb onto a plane and got defended by a local repuke politician), our next "terrorist" may be white guys from middle America...cuz no one seems to have problem with them having bombs. Hell, they had this last kid's license plate number, his name, etc. and he still got within feet of a full stadium with his explosive!!

"I think it's important to note that it's not a criminal activity to purchase ammonium nitrate fertilizer," Younger said. However, he noted that the context of Hinrichs' conversation with a manager of Ellison Feed & Seed was suspicious. Younger indicated that the off-duty officer reported that Hinrichs asked about different types of fertilizer and the concentration of ammonium nitrate in each.

The officer, according to Younger, took a mental note of the conversation and its context, and then followed Hinrichs outside. The officer took down the student's license tag number, contacted Norman's police department dispatch operation, had Hinrichs checked for outstanding warrants -- but, alas, found nothing.

The officer continued his investigation Thursday night, but could only conclude that Hinrichs was an OU student and lived in university-subsidized housing. The officer did contact a Norman bomb squad technician; however, the plan at that time was for the off-duty officer to complete a written report for submission the following Monday.

If Hinrichs had not died Saturday night, the Norman officer -- according to Younger -- would have filed the written statement, which would have eventually been submitted to federal authorities. The lead investigative agency in the Hinrichs case is the FBI; however, Younger noted the Norman police department would help as needed and requested.
