Bush predicts Supreme Court confirmation for Miers

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush predicted Friday that Harriet Miers will be confirmed to the Supreme Court despite grumbling from conservatives that has led a few to call for the president to withdraw her nomination.

Asked he if would rule out ever seeing Miers' name withdrawn, Bush did not answer directly — substituting instead words of confidence about her confirmation process. "She is going to be on the bench," he said. "She'll be confirmed."

Miers and her supporters are working the phones and knocking on doors to rally conservatives who argue that Bush has reneged on his promise to name justices with proven records as strong conservative.

Because the 60-year-old Miers spent her career in private practice and as a member of Bush's White House staff, conservatives outside the nation's capital have little to hang their hopes on except the president's word that she would be a justice in the mold of Antonin Scalia or Clarence Thomas.

4. So he thinks the BS he whispered in Dobson's ears will change things?
He must be drinking if he thinks she is any more popular with conservatives now than she was a week ago.

6. here's what the "conservatives" are saying:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/06/AR2005100600571.html

excerpt:

"Let me make this clear: I didn't want a fight," wrote conservative columnist and activist Maggie Gallagher. "What I wanted from President Bush was a nominee about whom, win or lose, we could all be proud. Instead, turning to His Girl Harriet, President Bush for once thought small. And that means, on this one President Bush is already a loser."

And with reliable conservatives openly rebelling against the nomination of Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court, it's becoming clear that the president has lost much of that political capital that was so handy one year ago. Conservative columnist George Will wrote in The Washington Post that "it is not important that she be confirmed. Second, it might be very important that she not be."

Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), the former majority leader, said Wednesday: "I don't just automatically salute or take a deep bow anytime a nominee is sent up, I have to find out who these people are, and right now, I'm not satisfied with what I know."

now is Arlen Specter. If he kills her nomination in committee, the other Repugs can duck the issue. If it goes to the Senate for a vote, then the Thugs have to either prove, once and for all, that they have no will of their own or likewise prove that they no longer trust Bush's judgment. So, it all hangs (I think) around Specter's neck...

15. I hadn't even considered that possibility
My impression of Specter is that he's just the guy to do it.

Definitely time to get out the

9. Well shoot! Why do we even HAVE a Senate?
Bush knows all, governs all. Let's just abolish all these other messy impediments to his wise and benevolent rule, and submit to his kind and loving ministrations.

Because you know that nobody in the Fourth Estate is going to make a stink about this.

12. Arlen Specter may stop her, but not for the fundie reasons...
Specter, despite some opinions of him on DU, would be appalled if Miers proves to be sub par during the hearings and will proceed to eviscerate her publicly as head of the judiciary committee.

He may provide a safe out for the efungelical wingnut Senators to vote 'no' but that would not be Specter's motive.

How well rounded of him.

Isn't it time these madmen are stopped from perpetuating more madness?

Miers on the Bench. Ya, right. I won't be surprised if she does get confirmed. We live in crazy times. But it won't be purty.
