Democrats sizing up governor's race

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- With Republicans mired in the state hiring investigation, Democratic leaders agree they have a chance to take back the governor's mansion.

And they agree they need to back a single candidate in the 2007 primary to avoid infighting that Republicans could exploit in the general election.

But while Democrats around the state speculate about who might run, party leaders have chosen no one.

Republicans, meanwhile, began running in March for the 2007 race -- Gov. Ernie Fletcher announced his intention to run, opened a re-election account and has been holding fundraisers.
