McCollum to run for attorney general
McCollum to run for attorney general

High-profile Republican forms team

By Jason Garcia
Tallahassee Bureau
Posted October 11 2005

TALLAHASSEE · Former U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum, a Republican from Longwood who has failed in two tries for a seat in the U.S. Senate, said Monday that he would run for Florida attorney general next year.

"I'm putting my team together," McCollum said. "It's something I would like the opportunity to serve the people of Florida doing."

McCollum, 61, represented the Orlando area in Congress for two decades before stepping down in 2000 to run for Senate and losing to Democrat Bill Nelson.

He ran a second time in 2004, but lost in the Republican primary to the eventual winner, former Orange County Chairman Mel Martinez.

2. He distinguished himself as one of the "impeachment managers."
What a "noble" group. Probably the oddest time in American history. They looked like complete idiots.

Half-wits.

6. more like Ted Olsen
of the Arkansas Project fame, of the vote counting in Fla in 2000, fame and author of the quote/sentiment that if you keep throwing mud (even if all of it is false) some of it is eventually bound to stick (from his Arkansas Project days.) He not only resembles Olsen in looks - but in practices.

9. a bit too young to know how Howdy Doody was involved
in machinations to try to obstruct democratically elected presidents? OR - even the allusions to behavior per Howdy Doody (was he a scheming puppet? seriously - he was off the air by the time I was watching kid TV)

10. I guess I was referring more to his ability to deal
with reality - like McCollom's strutting around thinking the impeachment charges would actually stick - and like Howdy actually thinking he was real and meaningful

11. I see - and in that light - I agree - and that is a difference from Olsen
he didn't wait to "see" if his game was reality - he took malicious machinations to create a new reality.

5. Great - put a rabid partisan (house impeachment) in charge of elections
in Florida. I do hope that the angle of his extreme partisanship over serving the public via public policy gets played up in his campaign - and that the good voters of Florida are fed up with their elections appearing to be... er... tampered with - and that they vote to keep him far, far away from overseeing elections in Florida.

14. He lost to Mel Martinez
McCollum lost the republican primary to Mel Martinez. It was one of the nastiest things I've ever seen.

The Martinez camp called McCollum "the darling of the homosexual lobby". Why? I don't know. Maybe he didn't publicly endorse execution for homosexuals or something.

After the damage was done Martinez apologized and claimed he didn't know anything about it. It was a "rogue staffer" who was responsible for the smear.

Sure it was. For the record, Karl Rove was advising the Martinez campaign...

A lot of the less psychotic republicans around here were pretty disgusted with Martinez. They managed to hold their nose and vote for him, though.

17. It's a real side-show seeing one unscrupulous right-winger go after
another one, isn't it?

No matter how familiar it is to see them behave like wild beasts, Mel Martinez's campaign simply stunned and horrified onlookers.

Bush really wanted Bob Graham's empty Senate seat bad. There is absolutely no honor among them.

15. I remember when he and several others interviewed Monica
prior to her appearance at the impeachment hearings. The others dressed down to make her feel more comfortable, but McCollum didn't, and wore his usual white shirt and tie. He asked Monica a particularly salacious question, and she said something to the effect that she'd answer, but she didn't want to put a wrinkle in his shirt.

I'll never forget his bad mouth speeches about Clinton during the impeachment hearings. God! What a little-prick.
