Missteps in building Broward elections office could hinder 2008 elections

Broward County commissioners, whose deal to build a $45 million elections and property appraisers office collapsed, will be warned this week that their missteps have threatened the smooth running of the 2008 election.

Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes said she would tell commissioners in a series of private meetings that she needs a new headquarters now.

If they don't act promptly, Snipes predicted that voters may end up the innocent victims of the commission's failed plan to build a sprawling government complex on a political insider's land.

"This has dragged on and on. If something isn't done soon to start building, our ability to pull off a good election will be jeopardized," Snipes said.
