Poll: Bloomberg, helped by terror alert, extends lead

Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg boosted his lead over his Democratic challenger, according to a poll released Wednesday, just days after he announced a possible terrorist threat to the city’s subways.

Bloomberg led Fernando Ferrer by 28 percentage points among likely New York City voters, or 60 percent to 32 percent, in the Quinnipiac University poll taken from Oct. 4 to Monday.

A Quinnipiac poll released three weeks earlier found the incumbent leading by 14 percentage points, or 52 percent to 38 percent.

The latest poll began questioning voters two days before Bloomberg appeared with Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and FBI officials Oct. 6 to announce the report of what they said was the most detailed threat against New York City since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

1. Haven't there been reports that the tip may have been a hoax?
If so, I'm beginning to wonder just who called it in?

6. Yes. It's slowly being sorted out. Bloomberg's opponent....
Fernando Ferrer called on Bloomberg to explain his thinking in calling the alert. He was met with a wild barrage of indignant charges from Bloomberg's handlers.... leading me to believe that there's actually a lot there that ain't legit.

2. Write it off
Hillary is going to be re-elected in a landslide, Spitzer will be governor, and Democrats will gain seats in the legislature. You can't win them all.

11. NYC is 75% blue and they are going to have a....
Bush fundraiser as their mayor? :wtf: NYC is becoming Oklahoma.

You know what, maybe New Yorkers are weaklings. Maybe they are afraid.

Also, how many seats will the Democrats win in the legislature?

3. Still don't understand how "terra" always gives a boost to poll numbers
"Terra!" has never budged my opinion of a politician, except to make me more cynical, as the "terra!" warning is always bogus.

4. So Bloomberg, Kelly and FBI officials announced the report of what..
they said was the most DETAILED THREAT against NYC since 9/11 and it turned out to be a hoax. I wonder if Bloomberg's numbers will go down because of the hoax.

9. Remains to be seen. Largely depends on how the media here ....
and the media here is pro-Bloomberg. The Times today was full of rationales for poor B and no real demand for a 'splanation. On Monday, when the news that there had been no threat broke, the Times ignored it entirely.

The rest of the media is backing Bloomberg with virtually no pretense of objectivity so... no, there probably will not be a big hit taken by Bloomberg for pushing the panic button. Although the polls are likely to level off at previous levels: Bloomberg about 12-15 pts ahead.

DEM Ferrer shows little inclination to go on the offense about this... or any other issue for that matter... so it looks like were stuck with this consumate conniver for another four years.

5. Somebody should take a hit for this.
Either DHS mislead the mayor or the mayor way overreacted. We can't be running around disrupting entire cities every time some punk gets slapped around and tells a fib.

The only thing I can think of that might exonerate everyone is if there actually was an organized plot to create this hoax, so that there was corroborating evidence as well. But I haven't heard anyone say that was the case.

10. That whole thing surprised me, actually.
So far, Bloomberg has been very careful and reserved in his use of 9/11 and terrorism in general. The report, as I understand it, came from an Iraqi informant. Whether that person was just a tip or someone they had been interrogating, I do not know.

I wouldn't say Bloomberg is worried enough to pull some Terror'lert crap like this. Especially so far from the election itself. Because no slight to Ferrer, but barring any huge mistakes or revelations, I don't think Mayor Mike is going to lose.

12. Poll, articles part of the media propaganda - paid by Bloomberg/GOP
Ferrer is an idiot, who is financially outmatched by the GOP media and Bloomberg's personal fortune. New Yorkers are idiots to have allowed the media push them into allowing Ferrer to be the candidate (after his behavior 4 years ago). Just like all Democrats were idiots in 2004 for being seduced by the media to pick Kerry as a candidate - same lame idiot.
I predict a record low turnout which will probably favor the gangster over the idiot.
