Bush approval dips below 40 percent

NBC-WSJ poll shows only 28 percent believe U.S. headed in right direction

WASHINGTON - It has been weeks since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast; since gas prices began spiking to record highs; and since Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, held her antiwar vigil outside President Bush's Texas ranch. But, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, the fortunes of the Bush administration and the Republican Party have not yet begun to recover.

For the first time in the poll, Bush's approval rating has sunk below 40 percent, while the percentage believing the country is heading in the right direction has dipped below 30 percent. In addition, a sizable plurality prefers a Democratic-controlled Congress, and just 29 percent think Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers is qualified to serve on the nation's highest court.

"Any way you slice this data, I think these are just terrible sets of numbers," said Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

The poll shows that Bush's approval rating stands at 39 percent, a new low for the president. In the last NBC/Wall Street Journal survey, which was released in mid-September, 40 percent approved of Bush's job performance while 55 percent disapproved. In addition, just 28 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction, another all-time low in Bush's presidency.

That now they're proposing to limiting or removing the tax deduction for people's first home's and their medical coverage, shifting more of the tax burden away from the rich.

Yeah right, that'll work with the public. I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the 20's once this sinks in.

That's Two Percent.

Two. Percent.

It's not in the article, but Russert mentioned it when they were talking about the poll on the NBC evening news tonight.

14. Here is the next paragraph - they seem surprised. I'm not.
"Strikingly, much has happened in the time between those two polls — many of them seemingly positive events for the White House. The president delivered a prime-time speech from New Orleans, in which he promised to rebuild the Gulf Coast. He also made several more visits to the region, to examine the damage caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Furthermore, he saw the Senate confirm John Roberts to the Supreme Court, and he nominated Miers, his White House counsel, to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor."

"Strikingly, much has happened in the time between those two polls-- many of them seemingly positive events for the Kremlin. The Chairman delivered a prime-time speech from Stalingrad, in which he promised to rebuild Chernobyl. He also made several visits to the region, to examine the damage caused by the accident and to announce that local bread stores would be stocked with ten more loaves each day, and every effort would be made to increase the toilet paper supply. Furthermore, he saw the Politburo confirm a man who helped install him as Chairman to the Supreme Soviet, and he nominated another right-hand man to another vacancy in the Supreme Soviet."

His "approval" rating needs to be nothing. NO redeeming qualities. I've never seen anything like it. Definetly had the gilded turd syndrome. Anybody that voted for him either didn't see, or didn't care about the turd underneath.

52. I wonder if he could out do Taft at 15%
maybe he is trying to do more than every other Republican out there in every category. DeLay gets indicted, he hopefully gets the entire WHIG indicted. Poppy Bush one war, one term. Jr. two wars, looking to Syria for 3, and two terms in office. He is still trying to beat Hoover for unemployment and poverty levels though. He has run past Reagan for vacation days and debt. Number of Americans killed on his watch, well he has them all beat. Maybe he needs that third war with Syria to make sure he surpasses the number killed in Vietnam during Nixon's terms.

22. TWO Percent
That's lower than the level of mathematical noise -- which is usually 3% for public surveys of this kind.

It means that a full 5% of the Black community is behind Bush. Conversely, it could mean that -1% of all Blacks approve of him.

Another favourite of mine is no 6 of "get your war on."

The first section of 6 frames is a classic!

"What a go-getter that kid! (Walker). That'll be some ***** college application essay! Yeah, a real self-starter! Why couldn't his parents get him interested in some nice hobbies like sniffing glue, for ***** sake!"

Then, "The entire military might of the United States versus a cave-dwelling maniac and a one-eyed Moslem cleric! This is like Rambo versus the Hobbit!"

But the dialogue in the rest of that mini strip is almost as funny!

38. I keep wonderin' when the next terra attack will happen to der Homeland...
It would seem inevitable. Yet, that could now backfire. Katrina already asked the hard question WTF you been doin' about preparedness since 9/11. After all, a natural disaster is just another form of terror attack by the bogeyman in the sky.

So, if we have another terror attack, even that like that little (still unsolved) anthrax (strain from a US gov't lab) terror attacks (on Dem politicians and "liberals" journalists) there will be a lot of ugly questions for Bu$hitCo. Heck, maybe even a little people's par-tay at the pResident's place!!

The only reason I can see for it really happening now is they want/need to launch martial law to keep control of their stolen country and raided treasury. These criminals will not leave quietly, count on that!!

There isn't going to be one. One pretext or another will make Bush declare martial law.
Our only real chance is to get a Democratic congress in 2006 and then maybe we can get them to impeach him. That, or insurrection.

Ther last paragraph in the article:

"And while McInturff thinks that Bush’s approval rating actually may actually hover between 40 and 45 percent, he says that’s still problematic terrain from which to govern. "It is a very difficult place to be.""

Why do I find this hard to believe? Oh yea, it's Republican pollster Bill McInturff who's doing the lying, I mean talking. What a maroon. No matter how you spin it, the boy king is going down, ladies.

44. The 49% shows us just how lame the Democrats are for 06.
There is no excuse for that number with all these scandals. I have not seen them get over 50 in any poll. The Democrats really need to get focused. Most people only know they are weak on defense and will not trust them to Govern durning war. They need to address that issue and find a way to sell themselves to voters on security issues.

happening right now. They are still thought of as the Pink Tutu sissycrats who will not fight. They better change that image fast- if they want to be in charge of any house in Washington. I see small gains only right now at best. I am no defeatist elitist- and I want them to win- but I don't see them trying to correct a public perception of weakness.

60. Nixon's approval rating went up for 8 months after the Watergate break-in
In June of 1972 Nixon was at 57% approval and the following January of 1973 he was up to 68%. It wasn't until the summer of 1973 that Nixon hit 39% during the height of Watergate.

He got the high approval ratings in January '73 'cause he brought the boys home from Viet Nam then. But as you point out, it was downhill from there.

117. Correct
And, if I'm not mistaken, the economy was on an upswing at that point in time also. Both of these factors helped shield his approval rating from the damaging effects of Watergate. However, in the end his house of cards came crashing down all the same.

The husband of my best friend is a retired businessman whom I have known many years is one. His wife and daughters hate Bush but no - not him. A couple of months ago I put together a packet of several excellent articles copied from the internet (SC and others) which I thought that once he read them he would maybe begin to see the light.

I put them in the mail and waited to hear from his wife. She read them but he wouldn't even glance at them.

And this is an intelligent (??) well read (reads all the newspapers)man from a blue state. Well, that ended my attempt at his conversion!

No way will I ever try again. That subject is forever closed, What a moron!

79. People really don't care about that stuff anymore.
Terrorism has almost become a joke. A good comparison I think would be back in England in the 1680 period there was a HUGE fear of a Catholic plot against the government back then, mostly ill-founded, and eventually it became a joke. The same is true more recently with McCarthyism and the red scare. Eventually, these things move to a point at which people make fun of them.

and even though I live in NY state I live in an extremely conservative, rural area which is almost universally red. I am surrounded by Bush-worshippers. is there anything in the Constitution that would prevent a recall election? I know it's never been done but we cannot tolerate 3+ more years of this administration. 109. We're stuck with that 39-43%
On Bush's lowest ebbs he usually gets to about 40-45%. This shouldn't shock or surprise us. We all know republicans who make excuses for Bush even on issues like Abu Ghraib. We see people who still have Bush/Cheney campaign stickers or "W the President" stickers on their car, just above the chrome Christian fish. These are the people who thought that Terri Schaivo was leading an active lifestyle, that Darwin was insane, and that our Judges are out of control. These are the people who agree with Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly that there is a liberal bias in the media. They belive in the reasons for the Iraq war (whatever they might be).
The scary thing is that they compose 39% of America.
