Government Urged to Back Science Education
WASHINGTON -- The government was urged Wednesday to launch a broad program supporting science education, research and innovation in an effort to maintain the nation's economic dominance.

Leadership in science and technology helped make the United States a world leader, but there are indications that could slip away, a committee of the National Academy of Sciences warned.

For example, 70,000 engineers were graduated in the United States last year, compared to 350,000 in India and 600,000 in China, the committee said in a new report. And in 2001, U.S. industry spent more on liability lawsuits than on research and development.

The report calls for four main efforts to shore up the nation's position.........

5. The government does back a strong science education
They believe the Earth is the center of the Universe, photos steal your soul, the Earth is flat, epilepsy is caused by demons, witches float, and that if someone sneezes you must say "God bless you." or their soul will escape.

7. 350,000 in India and 600,000 in China
The obvious solution to keep our Theocracy from slipping back into the dark ages.

Other recommendations included providing automatic visa extensions to foreign students who have received doctorate degrees who want to seek employment in the United States

8. Here are the four main positions:
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 10:16 PM by hatrack
1. They're all just theories - gravity, evolution, thermodynamics, optics, electromagnetism, erosion and the circulation of blood - nothing to see here, move along! Alternative explanations - as many as possible - must be offered to all children in schools, so as to prevent undue influence by any self-styled "elite" of scientists.

2. Whatever it is they're teaching in science classes, unless it offers a substantial payoff to shareholders in two fiscal quarters or less, it ain't worth a shit, and it sure isn't worth teaching about.

3. Anything that might state or imply that a Magic Cloud God-Man might not have been in total control of every step of the creation and development of the universe must be removed from all science curricula. It's better by far that America slide steadily downhill into an abyss of ignorance and poverty than run the risk of offending even one ignorant sherrif's deputy with a stash of confiscated kiddie porn in Lancaster PA or a single anxious, anorexic Pentacostal minister's wife in Chanute KS with even a cloud of suspicion that maybe, just maybe, they won't live forever, after all. After all, ignorant sherrif's deputies and anorexic Pentacostal housewives vote.

4. And whatever it is they're not teaching in science classes, we'll hire Chinese and Indians to do it for us - cheaper and easier, anyway.

10. American science education will soon be dead...
since we are a theocracy. If some of the evangelical count cases win the day, the schools will be taken over by the American version of the Christian taliban. One belief in the American scientific community is that the world's scientists and engineers will be trained in China and Japan.

11. Things are just soo complicated we need God to make that stuff for us.
That is what should be tought in science class. God will take care of everything because it is just too complicated for Americans..
