China:Children Shot at School

A gunman has injured 16 primary schoolchildren in eastern China.
The pupils were shot with a homemade gun but no deaths have been reported. Police have been searching for the man, who escaped after the shooting at the Niutoushan Primary School in Guangde County in Anhui province.

There was no indication of the reason for the attack or whether police had any details of the man's identity. Seven students have been taken to hospital with severe wounds, while nine others suffered less serious injuries, the reports said.

China has suffered a series of attacks on schoolchildren in the past two years, usually involving knives. The central government responded by ordering schools throughout the country to hire guards and take other steps to tighten security.

A state news agency said a middle-aged man opened fire in the school at about 8.15am, on Wednesday. The pupils had been exercising at the time.

1. My gut reaction: At least he had to MAKE a gun at home.

It's pretty hard to stop people who know what they're doing from manufacturing weapons without shutting down civil society. It is possible to set the bar quite high. In this case, seems that the bar was set high enough he couldn't buy a gun. That is a deterrent. Not complete, but at least it's there...

Again, that's my gut reaction.

3. let me play devil's advocate

in many ways the people responsible for that attack, apart of the shooters, were all the adults who missed the signs

The parents, who never asked... what are dear-ie one and two doing?

The school administrators who never did a damn thing about hazing...

and lastly going back to the parents, I am sorry but I would be very curious to know why my kids are spending so much time together playing with guns?

The guns perse... well that is partly the holes in our laws, that allow for the sale of some of these toys (they are not) at gun shows

But the guns, though available, are the least responsible for this, it is the parents and other adults who chose to ignore signs that were present that somethings were not kosher, such as the kids rap sheet.

And in general I am not a fan of the guns don't kill, but in this case the guns were the least of the problems, for these kids would have found other creative ways to do what they did... hey chemistry labs are great, and if you really want to kill many of your fellow students that Hydrochloric acid is marvelous... just ask me one day about the idiot kids who decided to get even with their fellow students and had no guns... lets just say the HAZMAT incident was not enjoyable and the school ended burying five kids, two were scared for life and the deary responsible ended up in juvy and in the system. Only reason it did not get worst, early in the morning during the winter did not help.

Actually, the Russia thing was Chechnyans, same as the last time. They killed them. The Chinese thing seems rather Columbine-ish, though, although it was an adult doing the shooting--maybe he was teased as a kid, and is having his revenge in his old age???
