University of Alabama's 1st black graduate dies
ATLANTA - Vivian Malone Jones, one of two black students whose effort to enroll at the University of Alabama led to George Wallace’s infamous “stand in the schoolhouse door” in 1963, died Thursday, her sister said. She was 63.

After all the turmoil that she went through in attending UA, she has really been uplifted since the school's integration. I hate to hear this because of my allegiance to the University of Alabama and dedication to civil rights.

I guarantee that UA will honor Mrs. Jones. She certainly deserves it.

I remember that day well on the old black & white TV screen. What courage! Hard to imagine today how much pure courage it took to enter Alabama University! Thank you so much.

I had the pleasure of meeting this lovely lady when I was "freedom riding" in 1963. (I had one hell of a crush on her for quite sometime. LOL !) Her quiet thoughtfulness & resolve left a lifetime impression on me.

12. Civil Rights Pioneer Vivian Jones Dies
ATLANTA (AP) - Vivian Malone Jones, one of two black students whose effort to enroll at the University of Alabama led to George Wallace's infamous "stand in the schoolhouse door" in 1963, died Thursday. She was 63.

Jones, who went on to become the first black to graduate from the school, died at Atlanta Medical Center, where she had been admitted Tuesday after suffering a stroke, said her sister, Sharon Malone.

"She was absolutely fine Monday," Sharon Malone said.
