Scott McClellan Says Helen Thomas Opposes 'War on Terrorism'
Scott McClellan Says Helen Thomas Opposes 'War on Terrorism'

By E&P Staff

Published: October 13, 2005 3:50 PM ET

NEW YORK Questions today from longtime White House reporter Helen Thomas caused White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan to declare that she opposes the war on terrorism. His response caused one of Thomas's colleagues, Terry Moran, to leap to her defense.

Here is the exchange from the official transcript:

THOMAS What does the President mean by "total victory" -- that we will never leave Iraq until we have "total victory"? What does that mean?

McCLELLAN: Free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the Middle East, because a free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the Middle East will be a major blow to the ambitions --

<snip>

THOMAS They also know we invaded Iraq.

McCLELLAN: Well, Helen, the President recognizes that we are engaged in a global war on terrorism. And when you're engaged in a war, it's not always pleasant, and it's certainly a last resort. But when you engage in a war, you take the fight to the enemy, you go on the offense. And that's exactly what we are doing. We are fighting them there so that we don't have to fight them here. September 11th taught us --

THOMAS It has nothing to do with -- Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

McCLELLAN: Well, you have a very different view of the war on terrorism, and I'm sure you're opposed to the broader war on terrorism. The President recognizes this requires a comprehensive strategy, and that this is a broad war, that it is not a law enforcement matter.

Terry.

TERRY MORAN On what basis do you say Helen is opposed to the broader war on terrorism?

McCLELLAN: Well, she certainly expressed her concerns about Afghanistan and Iraq and going into those two countries. I think I can go back and pull up her comments over the course of the past couple of years.

MORAN And speak for her, which is odd.

McCLELLAN: No, I said she may be, because certainly if you look at her comments over the course of the past couple of years, she's expressed her concerns --

THOMAS I'm opposed to preemptive war, unprovoked preemptive war.

MR. McCLELLAN: -- she's expressed her concerns.

7. This is outrageous. And Bush wants to make the military domestic police.
No dissent allowed, thank you very much. The combination of this absolute outrage and the staged and choreographed questions from the troops, along with the call for making the American military a domestic police force under Bush's control (because of Avian flu - yeah, right) ought to give everyone pause. McLellan should be fired for this; he will probably get the Medal of Freedom. They are rattled. And that means we are in danger.

Helen is a national treasure and the ONLY one who was asking the tough questions of these traitors from the start. Even when the rest of the White House Press Corps was falling over themselves trying to out suckass the others, Helen stood strong in her convictions. This woman should be awarded the Nobel Prize!

It shouldn't be a "war on terrorists" (terrorism, itself, of course, is a concept), because, when the indigenous people are on the side of the insurgents, asymmetric warfare cannot be won by hostile regular forces, even employing irregulars.

An ongoing, preventive civil campaign must of course be waged at home by the appropriate national-security agencies, and the causes of the insurgents disaffection - so extreme as to often be suicidal, just so long as some of the enemy can be killed - identified, acknowledged and settled. People don't behave like that without a genuine and very serious grievance.

You're a White House in the middle of a public relations meltdown, so the obvious strategy is to alienate the White House press corps. That's the sort of strategy they don't teach in Public Affairs School.

What a dipshit.

TONIGHT. Here's a thread on this, including a COMPILATION of current DU threads on the scripted photo-op and the bizarre press conference:

threads on the scripted photo-op plus McClellan's lying press conference - in which, by the way, Scotty also accused Helen Thomas of opposing the war on terrorism!!!

62. Yes, I think so too. Be sure to see the segment of the Olbermann show
on Oct 13 with Dana Millbank of the Wash Post. They go over that, how the wheels seem to be coming off. Millbank has the interesting suggestion that it really started when Bush refused to speak to Cindy Sheehan, and they go through other things, even the crazed body language of Bush and the 2% polls for black voters. Telling quote: "Nobody is ralling behind Bush now." (from memory; I may have it slightly off) See that clip at a link here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=5054730&mesg_id=5056247

It's the third video clip of the four posted here.

That line * used about "Not stoping until we achieve total victory" in his spiele to the troops today stuck out to me too. I'm so glad Helen Thomas asks about this stuff. She is the voice of the people, and for so long was the only one doing the work of asking the hard questions.

once you start peering too close to the core of their message they get very defensive. they have two options, fight or flight. they choose fight with Helen.

it's a similar problem the chimp faces with Sheehan. she wants to ask him a simple question that peers too close to the core. They choose flight with Cindy.

Go ahead Scotty, let's finally define the war on terror. And let's define all the other slogans and cliches, too. What does it mean to support our troops? Does it mean, "Do not criticize the administration?" What does "staying the course" mean? Never admit a mistake? 63. This is great!

Now more than ever the reporters need to be asking "Why are we still in Iraq?" Bush keeps calling Saddam a fascist, but last I heard he was in prison. It's really certain Saudis who control all the oil money, who are buying into our media and banking systems, and who are acting simultaneously together with the terrorists and with the administration that we need to be worried about. The insurgents may be coming from neighboring countries, but where is their funding coming from? If America stays on its current track we will decline to the point where we no longer have a say in what happens in the Middle East because Asia will be in control, and China hasn't adopted democracy yet either. Even Nixon would be better for us now than what we have!

And that makes her a target. I should not be surprised anymore at how far they will go to stifle dissent. She was attacked for doing her job--demanding the answers from the administration. What is Scotty there for if not to answer questions? It shows that sham of the whole press briefing process.

His statement was ugly and points to the dangerousness of this administration. They wanted to minimize her as a wacko who likes terrorists because she is not a lemming.

84. My most memorable Helen Thomas quote
"I have never covered a president who actually wanted to go to war. Bush's policy of pre-emptive war is immoral - such a policy would legitimize Pearl Harbor. It's as if they learned none of the lessons from Vietnam," she said to enthusiastic applause.

http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2002/thomas-1106.html

I remember when Helen used to sit on the front row at press conferences. I don't know if that was decided by seniority, or something like that. When Bush took office she promptly lost her front row seat. How typical of this fascist regime, punishing all those who refuse to be part of their propaganda machine!

Isn't Terrorism a criminal act ?
Like Tim McVeigh and the Unabomber, et al ? I never thought the 9-11 attacks were an Act of War, just some loonies that slipped by our intelligence (including our crack administration team!)

Now Pearl Harbor was an act of war, because we were attacked by a military under orders from their government leaders.

We still haven't found OBL ? And threat of terrorism is worse now than sporadic cases pre-9-11. And we have killed more innocent civilians than have killed us. What a way to sell Democracy

So yes, I agree with and support Helen Thomas and Scotty is full of sh*t.

90. Well, Scotty's probably right, technically.
Helen Thomas probably does oppose the "broader war on terrorism," as should we all. Why? because it's a myth and a big sloppy bucket of propaganda. It's a tool to promote fascism. It's perpetual war and perpetual fear. It's complete and utter bullshit and it has to STOP under the next Democratic administration. Dealing with terrorism IS a law enforcement matter, and a diplomatic matter, and a matter of, for ONCE, treating other countries with respect instead of exploiting them. I really wish someone in the press would step up and say what needs to be said. The war on terror is the last tattered shred of an idea that's keeping Bush afloat as President. If we could somehow expose it for what it is, Bush would melt away like the Wicked Witch.

143. I heard a fascinating interview on NPR one afternoon
with a researcher who alleged that much of *'s linguistic retardation (and, one might extrapolate, that of his accompices) is contrived in order to appeal to the cretins and buffoons of the far right. Not sure if I believe this but it's interesting...after all, *'s dad might be a conniving ass-whore for the saudis, and his mother is a see-you-next-tuesday turd in a gas station lavatory, but he wasn't raised by wolves. By rights he should at least have as much command of english as Latka Gravis. But if it's true it's minor brilliance -- if you were to take them to task for "impordant" or "nookyoolar" or for making plurals with apostrophe-s (I bet he does that, too! ;) ) they can counter attack by accusing you of elitism, of bullying the simple folk. (Even when those simple folk are ivy league brazillianaires.) Whether or not this specific accusation is true this IS a fantastically anti-intellectual regime -- one more check box on the "are you a fascist?" list.

if it looks like lying, murder, profiteering, and fear mongering... i guess i'm on that list as well Scotty... as well as the majority of americans right now.

I would so kick this guy's ass if i saw him on the street. Sorry, I'm not a buddhist.

124. You're off message again, Scotty.
It's the "war on terra", not "the war on terraism"! What's next, Scotty? The "Democratic Party" instead of "Democrat Party" like we told you? :sarcasm:

136. Note: "broader Middle East"
seems to be rephrasing of "Greater Middle East," which stretches (at least) from Morocco to Pakistan but only corresponds to predominantly Moslem countries, according to NeoCon geographers...

ref. eg: http://www.brookings.edu/views/op-ed/fellows/wittes20040510.htm

in the context of which the relationship with (WMD-proliferating, non-democratic) Pakistan and the recent moves on Iran fall into place...

<snip>

McCLELLAN: Free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the Middle East, because a free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the Middle East will be a major blow to the ambitions --

THOMAS If they ask us to leave, then we'll leave?

MR. McCLELLAN: I'm trying to respond. A free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the broader Middle East will be a major blow to the ambitions of al Qaeda and their terrorist associates. They want to establish or impose their rule over the broader Middle East -- we saw that in the Zawahiri letter that was released earlier this week by the intelligence community.

137. wow, they must REALLY be scared and freaking out. scotty is a slimeball.
but always does a good job sliming for them. i've never seen him lose control like that. and because of it, he had to sink to repeating stupid propaganda bullshit memes that are old and tiring.

i mean, really, how many times can we hear that "we're going on the offense and taking the fight over there so we don't have to fight them over here" shit again??? he's paid to do a much better job than that. and he probably would have if he hadn't gotten so nasty to Helen.

Helen got him but GOOD!!! I thought he was more of a professional than that. he was too caught up in anger and hate and sank to unimaginative low's. what a sad, SAD pathetic bunch of evil, slimy bastards. GO HELEN!! Way to kick his sorry ass off that delusional pedestal.

138. Did you see this happen?
I didn't, and I was appalled to see him using the tired propaganda lines too. Did he visibly lose control?

Unbelievable.

140. you can tell he did. esp. when the other reporter supported helen.
he got pretty irate and there was so much emotion in his voice. he could barely contain his anger. and somewhere in the mix (i didn't watch the original press conference, just the edited clips) he sort of caught himself and tried to get out of the mess he got himself in by trying to laugh it off. it was inappropriate and needless to say, it didn't work.

If he's free to completely slander Helen, I feel like we can say just about anything we want about his behavior as well...

146. I am also 100% opposed to the "war on terrorism" It's pure BS.
It's just a way to sell war toys and occupy countries. Just as meaningless as the "war against communism" and the "war on drugs". Purely designed to keep the arms sales flowing and to steal resources.
