Rove Faces Fourth Grand Jury Appearance

WASHINGTON - Karl Rove is getting a fourth and likely final chance to convince grand jurors he did nothing criminal in the CIA leak case, an appearance that carries some risks as prosecutors are close to wrapping up their probe

Rove, who long has been one of President Bush's closest aides, could appear as early as Friday, and prosecutors are warning him there is no guarantee he will not be indicted.

The White House has shifted from categorical denials two years ago that Rove or his chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, were involved in the leak of a covert CIA officer's name to "no comment" today.

Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald's criminal investigation could produce indictments and has caused major political problems for the Bush administration.

We couldn't hope for a more favorable climate in which this happens. The media appears to no longer be afraid of the WH's power to influence access and thus control reporters. Which hopefully means Rove will get little if any assistance in bending pubic opinion.

agree that Karl is the last witness planned .... that could, of course, change. It depends on what Karl says today.

Most likely, Fitzgerald will review this week's testimony over the weekend, and then finalize his plans. It is also likely that he has his paperwork 99% complete already.
