BOSTON --The Bush administration is backing a Senate plan to close the Boston office of the U.S. Energy Department, worrying advocates who say it may be more difficult for poor and elderly residents to get energy assistance grants.
New Englanders would still be eligible for the federal grants, which help people make their homes more energy efficient. But elected officials and nonprofit agencies told The Boston Globe that closing the office would make it harder for local groups to apply.
The local energy office distributed tens of millions of dollars in grants last year and the agency recently paid to weatherize 2,600 homes in Massachusetts.
"This is clearly going to continue to put the Northeast at a disadvantage in the energy equation," said Larry Chretien, director of the nonprofit Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance, which gets grants from DOE's Boston office. "If this were a private corporation moving its jobs to West Virginia, we'd be raking it over the coals."
