Pentagon Denies Talk With Troops Was Staged

WASHINGTON — Pentagon officials are denying that a live video conference between President Bush (search) and U.S. troops in Iraq was staged.

"On behalf of these fine young men and women, we certainly regret any perception that they were told what to say. It is not the case," said Pentagon spokesman Lawrence Di Rita.

...

"The soldiers were advised as to the issues they should expect to discuss, and decided among themselves who would speak to each issue as it may arise," Di Rita maintained.

...

Some senior Pentagon officials told FOX News that they are angry that soldiers were coached at all before the video conference went live

17. Liar of the Week or is it Weak
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 11:37 AM by Yossarian72
Molly Ivins shows the "liar of the week" aka chickenhawk bushman claims 100 hundred Iraqi battalions are ready, then a week later it was 80, then General Casey, in front of Congress committee says, well, (you can see him struggling between a rock and hard place) it is 1, (ONE) battalion, (I saw the Casey testimony). see last para below.

Re the staged news conference, the grunts know what is going on and this will only sow disrespect for those officers. As a Vienam vet I can tell you morale will suffer from this, when will the fraggin begin?

AUSTIN, Texas -- On one of those television gong shows that passes for journalism, the panelists used to have to pick an Outrage of the Week. Then, each performer would wax indignant about his or choice for 60 seconds or so. If someone asked me to name the Outrage of the Week about now, I'd have a coronary. How could anyone possibly choose?

I suppose the frontrunner is the anti-torture amendment. Sen. John McCain proposed an amendment to the military appropriations bill that would prohibit "cruel, inhuman or degrading" treatment of prisoners in the custody of the U.S. military.

This may strike you as a "goes without saying" proposition -- the amendment passed the Senate 90 to nine. The United States has been signing anti-torture treaties under Democrats and Republicans for at least 50 years. But the Bush administration actually managed to find some weasel words to create a loophole in this longstanding commitment to civilized behavior.

According to the Bushies, if the United States is holding a prisoner on foreign soil, our soldiers can still subject him or her to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment -- the very forms of torture used by the soldiers who were later prosecuted for their conduct at Abu Ghraib. Does this make any sense, moral or common?

So deeply does President Bush feel our country, despite all its treaty commitments, has a right to torture that he has threatened to veto the bill if it passes. This would the first time in five years he has ever vetoed anything. Think about it: Five years of stupefying pork, ideological nonsense, dumb administrative ideas, fiscal idiocy, misbegotten energy programs -- and the first thing the man vetoes is a bill to pay our soldiers because it carries an amendment saying, once again, that this country does not torture prisoners.

This is the United States of America. It is our country, not George W. Bush's personal property. The United States of America still stands for the rights of man, for freedom, dignity and justice. We do not torture helpless prisoners. Our soldiers are not the SS, not the North Vietnamese who tortured McCain and others for years on end, not bestial Argentinean fascists, not the Khmer Rouge.

Remember, we invaded Iraq because Saddam Hussein was such a horrible brute that he tortured people. This is beyond disgusting. The House Republicans, which have no shame, will try to weaken McCain's amendment. They need to hear from decent Republicans all over this country. Don't leave this hideous stain on your party's name. This is NOT what America stands for. We've had more loathsome and more dangerous enemies than Al-Qaida and managed to defeat them without resorting to torture.

And leading the charge in the House will be Tom DeLay, that pillar of moral rectitude and Christian mercy. Wait a minute: Didn't DeLay have to step down from his leadership position after he got indicted? Well, yes, but some step-downs are more down than others. There was The Hammer in full glory last Friday, twisting arms and working the floor on behalf of a real cutie of a bill to benefit the oil companies.

Even Republicans revolted. As Rep. Sherwood Boehlert said, "We are enriching people, but we are not doing anything to give the little guy a break." This bill was so awful the leadership had to hold the vote open for 40 minutes, a clear violation of House rules -- there's a five-minute limit on votes of this kind -- while the Republican leaders roamed the floor, cajoling, bullying and threatening.

I have become inured to Bush's idea of foreign policy, which is to tell the rest of the world, "Kiss my behind." But the policy does result in some lovely ironies. On Friday, Mohamed ElBaradei, the highly respected head of the United Nation's International Atomic Energy Agency, won the Nobel Peace Prize. Quite apart from whether you support George Bush or not, ElBaradei and the IAEA deserve the honor -- they have been both diligent and effective.

ElBaradei was right when he repeatedly warned the Bush administration Iraq did not have any weapons of mass destruction and has said the day the United States invaded "was the saddest in my life."

But you know our boy George: not for him the gracious, "Gee, you were right, and we wrong after all." Nope, after ElBaradei was proved right, Bush tried to have him fired. And the man in charge of carrying out the campaign to have the guy fired for being right? John Bolton, now our ambassador to the United Nations.

Liar of the week: George W. Bush said on his Saturday radio address a week and a half ago that Iraq has 100 battalions of battle-ready soldiers. By the time he got to his television address on Thursday, it was 80 battalions. (I guess it's worse to lie if they're taking pictures of you.) Unfortunately, the next day Gen. George Casey, who oversees U.S. forces in Iraq, said of those 80, the number of Iraqi battalions fit to fight independently of U.S. support had slipped from three to one. One, three, 80, 100 -- if this is Tuesday, it must be ...

21. What a blatant load of HORSESHIT!!!!!
How can they possibly DENY, with a straight face, that it was staged??

Here is a non-Faux article on the very same issue: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051013/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_iraq_8

Do note the headline!!!

Bush Teleconference With Soldiers Staged

"This is an important time," Allison Barber, deputy assistant defense secretary, said, coaching the soldiers before Bush arrived. "The president is looking forward to having just a conversation with you."

Barber said the president was interested in three topics: the overall security situation in Iraq, security preparations for the weekend vote and efforts to train Iraqi troops...."I'm going to ask somebody to grab those two water bottles against the wall and move them out of the camera shot for me," Barber said.

A brief rehearsal ensued.

"OK, so let's just walk through this," Barber said. "Captain Kennedy, you answer the first question and you hand the mike to whom?"

"Captain Smith," Kennedy said....

Ya know, the last time I checked, a DEPUTY ASD is reasonably high up in the Pentagon food chain...we aren't talking about a fucking FILE CLERK here. It is inconceivable that Douchebag DeRita DID NOT KNOW what she was doing. I am of the mind that HE PERSONALLY VETTED the Q and A before they staged this poorly-conceived propaganda piece.

Sucks getting caught, eh???

24. Starting the Spin dance a little late, aren't they?
By now, everyone here is familiar with the Bush scandal sidestep:

D-Day: Scandalous and morally vacant move by the Bush Administration
D+1: Deny it happened.
D+2: Kill the messenger and assassinate the character of others involved.
D+3: Admit it may have happened, but castigate the liberal media for questioning Adminstration action in time of war.
D+4: Terra! Terra! Terra!
D+5: New scandal, wash, rinse, repeat.

However, the Administration is late out of the box. They're only in the denial stage, which means this incident is going to bleed over into next week unless they can compress the dance into one day.

Someone in the White House has an impressive list of things to do today:

1) Question the patriotism of people watching unedited satellite feeds;
2) Place a quiet admission of guilt somewhere to keep the lawyers happy;
3) Blow something up.

31. pent. official: If the president goes off script. . .
and they wonder why people don't believe them any more?

During viet nam, I was 8-11 yrs old. I truly did not understand the reason for being there any more than I understood the reasons for the riots in Chicago. I did know, that once I heard the few prostesters on the air, they seemed to be convinced that they were right and that bad things were happening in Nam. Of course, the original Mayor Daley's english skills left much to be - well, lampooned.

For those slightly older, was there a similar PR spin, brain dead effort to stay on message?

I know there was no internet, but there was a thriving press, with aggressive, hungry and talented reporters, who searched out stories left and right. Was there as much spin and lying going on? Less? More? More or less the same?

36. Fox News: Pentagon Denies Talk With Troops Was Staged

Friday, October 14, 2005

WASHINGTON — Pentagon officials are denying that a live video conference between President Bush (search) and U.S. troops in Iraq was staged.

"On behalf of these fine young men and women, we certainly regret any perception that they were told what to say. It is not the case," said Pentagon spokesman Lawrence Di Rita.

A live feed of troops from the Army's 42nd Infantry Division and an Iraqi soldier was beamed into the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington from Tikrit Thursday to discuss the situation in Iraq with the president.

But some critics said the video conference was staged, referring to an on-camera shot of a Pentagon official shown coaching the soldiers.

"The soldiers were advised as to the issues they should expect to discuss, and decided among themselves who would speak to each issue as it may arise," Di Rita maintained.

I used to get so angry at Faux News but now I just laugh at their rediculousness. Their audience won't face the truth when it's right in front of them; they still continue to believe this garbage.

Anti-Military, Pro-Bush Spin on FNL
Today (10/14) was a fortunately/unfortunately day for me monitoring FNL. Fortunately, the noon hour, anchored by Bill Hemmer, included some actual hard news (Greg Palkot in Pakistan on the aftermath of the earthquake there). Unfortunately, it also included some real fluff (an ALERT to announce that a middle school in Miami FL had been evacuated, immediately followed by another ALERT to report that the evacuatio had been "downgraded" & only 5 people were affected). Fortunately, the fluff level continues to decrease as compared to what they used to dump on Rick Folbaum when he covered Fridays for David Asman. Unfortunately, there was also the usual spin ("fallout at the Pentaagon" over Bush's teleconference with soldiers). The spin was the most interesting, because in order to make it pro-Bush, they had to bash the Pentagon &, indirectly, the US troops forced to participate in Bush's latest PR stunt.

Here's the spin:

Are you saying that our President would not want to face our troops stationed in that festering quagmire of death and corruption known as Iraq and be held accountable for the decisions he has made that have so utterly changed their lives forever?

And why do you hate America?

62. Stripes: Pentagon dismisses claims it coached GIs for talk with Bush
Pentagon officials on Friday dismissed accusations that soldiers were coached and coerced before a nationally televised event with the president on Thursday.

Ten soldiers from the Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division and an Iraqi soldier, all stationed in Tikrit, Iraq, joined President Bush in a video teleconference for the event, billed as a conversation between the commander-in-chief and troops in the combat zone.

But about 30 minutes before the event began news outlets picked up a video feed of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Allison Barber speaking with the group about what to expect during the event, who should speak when, and how to deal with some questions posed by the president.

At one point, she advised the soldiers on who should take the microphone, “if he (Bush) gives us a question that’s not something that he has scripted.”

During the event the soldiers offered an upbeat assessment of the conflict in Iraq and of security forces preparations for this weekend’s vote.

U.S. news outlets seized on the story Thursday night, and members of the White House press corps questioned whether the event was rehearsed.

73. You must cut the Pentagon some slack ... Not!
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 07:48 AM by ElectroPrincess
Please recall the fact that when "Darth" Rumsfeld and his Neo-Conservative civilian cronies took over DA PLACE (The Pentagon), the most intelligent and moral General Officers were pushed to the sidelines and *encouraged* to resign.

These EVIL Neo-Cons in our Executive Branch have only spring-butt General Officers in the Pentagon as well as that crony POS Porter Goss running every little detail within the CIA.

It should come as NO surprise that the CREDIBLE and truly talented Intelligence Officers and Agents in the Pentagon and CIA are GONE?

Negroponte and Rumsfeld, et. al. have been successful at "dumbing down" the ENTIRE USA Intelligence Community with the possible exception of those within the NSA.

Our youth in the Active Duty Military are paying a "far too high" price for the arrogance and ineptitude of Bush's cronies and other Political Monsters who have been emplaced at high places.

The responsibility should start at the TOP of the Military and Civilian Food Chain. The truly egregious War Crimes have been years in planning ... it has only been in the past few years that the fruition of PNAC's Master Plan (a la Dr. Strangelove paranoia) has been *sucked into the intake.*

Shame on the Pentagon for such blatant lies and disinformation! Is it now any wonder when all the honorable Military members have either resigned and/or retired?

67. i don't get it! they have every opportunity to allow this to be a natural
interaction, which would be warm and cordial and give the pres a chance to seem human, and they're so scared that they manipulate it to death and end up with this debacle instead.

what the hell are these people thinking? is rove still suffering from kidney stones and, as a result, still doped up on class c narcotics?
