Terrorist laws to lock up objectors
By Marian Wilkinson, David Marr and Joseph Kerr
October 15, 2005

"Supporting the insurgency in Iraq, Afghanistan or any country where Australian troops are deployed could carry a penalty of seven years' jail under the Prime Minister's new terrorism laws.

The changes also allow for control orders of unlimited duration, secret preventive detention, the monitoring of lawyers, and life imprisonment for funding terrorist organisations. ...

New sedition offences will put big constraints on anti-war protests, familiar since the Vietnam era, and come down hard on those advocating violence against any religious, national or political group. ...

Detentions are secret but suspects are allowed to contact a family member or employers to say they are safe but, "not able to be contacted for the time being". If they disclose the detention they can be jailed for up to five years."

Take this as a warning, folks. Johnny Howard thinks he'll be the Shrub's favourite gerbil if he brings Fascist legislation into Australia before you get it in America. This stuff is all neocon inspired, and you guys will get it next.

3. Nominated because MR Danger will use the same exact wording.
All here at D/U under this law would be put in secret preventive detention.

Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 06:26 PM by shance
Look at all the corruption they wreak.

That's because the rich cowards will keep getting "voted" back in.

<snap*> Just like that!

And look! No fingerprints.

Just like my old Etch n Sketch.

7. It is practically certain to become one.
John Howard is enjoying a virtual dictatorship in Australia atm, as the Liberals (meaning right wing in Australia) have control of both houses of parliament. He is using this time to reconstruct Australia into a Buschco heaven, hoping to impress his "mate" (who can't even remember Johnny's name,) in the White House.

6. And as if that is not already bad enough,
Police will now be able to cordon off whole suburbs, bringing in the Feds to help them. I just hope this has nothing to do with a live H5N1 vaccine being tested in Melbourne this month by a doctor working for the Murdoch Childrens' Research Institute.

Bracks to give police new powers

VICTORIAN police will be given unprecedented powers to stop and search suspects, seize goods and "covertly" search people's homes under new counter-terrorism laws.

~ The Premier may in "limited circumstances" give police authority to stop and search people and vehicles, demand identification and seize goods. Police will also be able to cordon off certain areas, such as major events considered likely targets.

~ Police will have greater powers to search properties "covertly". At present, police must believe that a terrorist act has been committed to conduct a covert search. The changes will allow police to obtain a warrant for a covert search if they believe someone is planning an attack or is motivated to commit one.

~ It will be made easier to bring interstate and federal police into Victoria as "special constables" to help local authorities.

'Ill will' can lead to jail terms
From: By Samantha Maiden
October 15, 2005

SWEEPING new anti-terror laws include a plan to jail people for up to seven years for promoting feelings of "ill will" or hostility between different groups that would threaten the peace.

As John Howard yesterday defended the measures, the federal Government was angered by ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope's decision to publish the 107-page draft bill on his website.

<snip>

Asked yesterday by the Howard Government to remove the draft laws from their website, Mr Stanhope's office simply replied: "It's not coming down".

President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, John von Doussa QC, also expressed concerns at the Government's plans to rush its new anti-terrorism legislation.

is a complete wanker. I guess the Aussies can't take out that walking embarrassment like we can't take out our own psychopathic, unelected walking pile of dung. Pathetic.

Edited for spelling. "dime" is such a difficult word. ;-)
