Hempstead Dems up

Hope to take town away from the GOP

BY MICHAEL WHITE
DAILY NEWS WRITER

A century has passed since the Town of Hempstead was led by a Democratic town supervisor, but party leaders are giddy over the fact that this could be the year they pry away the GOP's crown jewel.
"This is the first time the Democrats have even had money to get their message out," according to Charlie Burr, campaign manager for County Assessor Harvey Levinson, who is challenging Republican incumbent Supervisor Kate Murray.

During the collapse of the Tom Gulotta administration, Republicans lost majority control of the Legislature, as well as the county executive seat.

But Hempstead - where such political heavyweights as Gulotta and former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato emerged - has remained a GOP bastion.

1. I would love to see the self-promotional Kate Murray defeated
I cannot tell you the amount of junk mail she sends out on glossy, colorful, and quality card-stock paper in the guise of informing its citizens of events or news in the Town. These mailings are promotional for Kate alone, as her name is promoted several times in large fonts, along with multiple pictures of her. This woman also appears in commericial "promoting" the town, but it is all for her self-recognition.

When I first moved here, I didn't know who she was or the politics in the area, but I immediately recognized that Kate Murray was all about Kate Murray. Her self-promotion sent me to the internet to find out who she was. I have called the Town of Hempstead many times and wrote to the state as well about the money being wasted - money spent that could be used to benefit the Town.

I am happy to see the Dem's commericals calling her out.
