Schwarzenegger Enters Debate Over Redistricting in Ohio
Schwarzenegger Enters Debate Over Redistricting in Ohio

By DEAN E. MURPHY
Published: October 18, 2005
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17 - Separate ballot measures in California and Ohio to remove lawmakers from the drawing of legislative districts have been dogged by accusations that they are essentially partisan power grabs.

Now Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, hopes to counter those claims by throwing his weight behind the Ohio measure, even though no prominent Republican elected official in that state has done so and many Republican lawmakers there are raising money to defeat it.
(snip)

"He has agreed to do it," said the supporter, Chellie Pingree, president of Common Cause, a watchdog group that is pushing for redistricting changes in more than a dozen states, including California and Ohio.

Ms. Pingree appeared Monday in San Jose with Mr. Schwarzenegger at a campaign stop on behalf of the California measure, Proposition 77. She said Mr. Schwarzenegger's willingness to break ranks with Ohio Republicans on the measure demonstrated that "this is the same issue in different states and though the political players change, incumbent politicians don't want to change the system no matter where they are."

2. Well
Good luck to him if he wants the Ohio legislature to sign on to changing the Constitution for him to be eligible to run for president. I guess he is not interested.

5. Ummm, I don't think this is a bad thing

From the article:
The endorsement of Proposition 77 by Reform Ohio Now, which has strong backing by labor unions, will raise hackles in California, where organized labor is firmly behind Democratic efforts to oppose all of Mr. Schwarzenegger's ballot measures. But redistricting supporters said the move would offer further proof that redistricting should transcend party politics.

I believe the redistricting should NOT be looked at as a political strategy. The Legislators have too much of an interest in the outcome and it usually doesn't involve giving the citizens the best representation. Regardless of party! I agree with Chellie Pingree on this one.

8. Ohio is different.... In California, they want to redistrict now...
In Ohio, the redistricting they are aiming at is the ten year cycle...

They just want to take it out of the political hands...

In Ohio, a panel consisting of the Gov., Att Gen, Sec of State, and one member each from the House and Senate comprise the panel....

they then draw the districts how ever they want...

The ohio issue would, from my understanding, draw on a geographical basis instead of a political basis...

10. Schwarzenegger endorses Ohio redistricting

Schwarzenegger endorses Ohio redistricting

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday endorsed an Ohio ballot measure that is similar to a redistricting proposal on California's Nov. 8 special election ballot.

Like Proposition 77, the Ohio proposal would take redistricting powers away from state legislators and turn them over to a commission. It's also on the ballot Nov. 8.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, is battling the perception that his support for Proposition 77 is an attempt to elect more Republicans to the state Legislature and California's congressional delegation. The Ohio proposal is backed by Democrats.

12. Even without vote tampering, this extra-Constitutional Extreme Gerrymander
-ing in off-census years by itself will be a crushing blow to any hopes we have of being a Free Nation again.

These are nonviolently "brutal" assaults on the behalf of the One-Party State.

commision, like CA's? I plan to vote a big fat NO, btw... I had my fill of redistricting in an off census year when I lived in Austin... asshole DeLie.

14. Did Ohio call a special election for their ballot measure
Did Ohio spend $80 million for a power grab by the governor?
Changing the way redistricting is done is not a bad thing, but what Arnold is proposing will allow it to be influenced by the politicians so it will get us nowhere. What he is proposing is more of the same. Arnold is trying to look busy by arranging the paper clips on his desk without actually doing anything to help out.

16. Very sophisticated. I was wondering if they'd figure this out.
I think the point is too subtle but it shows he has some smart people around him.

I totally despise Schwarzenneger and every thing he stands for, don't mis read this for a nano second.

But...

Bottom line is Arnie loses, Reform Ohio wins. Sorry Arnie, you're toast!
