Bush says offshore drilling criticism is "partisan politics"

BILL KACZOR

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush called criticism from a half-dozen environmental groups "partisan politics" on Tuesday and continued to defend his efforts to reach a compromise on offshore drilling in Congress.

Some Republicans, including Bush, argue that putting a 120- or 125-mile buffer around the state into federal law would be better long-term protection even though it would allow drilling closer to shore than now permitted.

"That cannot be considered a retreat unless you're political," the governor said. "If you are just trying to do this for partisan political purposes, perhaps that's fair game. That's what they always do."

The environmental groups, however, cited opposition to the compromise from both of Florida's U.S. senators, Republican Mel Martinez and Democrat Bill Nelson. Florida's House Democrats also are opposed while Republican representatives are split.

6. Jeb is a big a liar and hack as his brother
He campaigned on a pledge to never allow offshore drilling. I knew he wouldn't keep that pledge, no repuke corporatist would.

Floridians believed him. For some reason, even democrats here like him. I just can't figure it out. :eyes:

10. Interesting
You don't explain why you think off-shore drilling is a good idea. If you believe it will lessen our dependence on foreign oil sources, do you believe that it's worth the risk of an ecological disaster? Do you reject the idea that conservation, and research and development of alternative fuel sources and better engines would be a safer and more economical way to go?

Please elaborate.

Thanks.

15. You obviously don't live in Florida.
That part along the gulf is RED. Republicans dominate. Your, ahem, tree-huggers voted just like you did in the last election. Do you think Jeb Bush would have tried to appease them a few years ago by stopping any oil drilling if they had been Democratically controlled counties? Think, you fool. Oh, that's right, you voted for Bush. Thinking is beyond you.

11. LOL.
Bush maintains the compromise would protect more area because it would include Atlantic shores and the Straights of Florida now exempt from the moratoriums.

I'm guessing there's no oil on the Atlantic coast and the Straights are either too dangerous for drilling or are also without oil deposits...

And, in any event, I don't think "partisan politics" in defense of environmental protection is wrong as he implies.

Some Florida Dem ought to stand up and say, "You're right, Jeb. It is partisan politics!!!"

"It's partisan, Democratic politics to ensure long term environmental safeguards for our state."

16. Yeah, sure it is:
partisans of the earth;
partisans of the people of the earth;
partisans of those who live near the ocean;
partisans of those who play at the ocean;
partisans of the tourist industry;
the type of partisans that this country needs.
