26 Iraqis and 5 G.I.'s Killed; Reporter Missing
At least 26 Iraqis, 5 American soldiers and a British soldier were killed in attacks late Tuesday and Wednesday, officials reported Wednesday.

Rory Carroll, a reporter working for The Guardian, was believed to have been abducted in Baghdad, the newspaper said.
....
The lethal attacks and the kidnapping may have been timed to the start of the trial. Two mortars landed in the fortified Green Zone before the trial began, and a string of explosions could be heard in central Baghdad after nightfall.
....
The American military said three soldiers were killed Wednesday by a roadside bomb near the town of Balad. One soldier was killed and four were wounded in a vehicle fire near Tikrit, Mr. Hussein's hometown. A fifth soldier was killed and three were wounded by a roadside bomb near Iskandariya.

A British soldier was killed by a roadside bomb late Tuesday, the British defense ministry said.

2. icasualties doesn't have the 3 killed in Balad listed yet
With those added, we'd be at 53 for the month and 1,986 overall.

Will anybody make a big deal about 2,000? We're quickly closing in on that number, and will probably reach it before the end of the month. In Vietnam, the 1st 1,000 were hard, then it was routine untill we hit 10,000, then 20,000, then 30,000, etc. What will be the reaction for 2,000 now? Hell, if the insurgents keep killing 5 and 7 a day, we might hit 2,000 before the end of the week...

9. K&R - RIP- Wish the dems would get a backbone and oppose this needless
sacrifice of our soldiers and the destruction of Iraq. Everyone knows it was based on lies. But the democratic "leadership" repeats the Bush mantra: "stay the course" "irresponsible to set a pullout date" "wrong to 'cut & run". Some fucking leaders. Fuck them, too.

:grr:

10. I totally agree
Let's kill 50,000 American boys and girs to stay the course and show those other didn't die in vain. Get real. The Mideast could care less about democracy. W wanted their oil and went for it. He wants to make sure his kids and grandkids live lives of luxury, like he did.

Guardian journalist abducted in Baghdad

Ewen MacAskill
Thursday October 20, 2005
The Guardian

The Guardian's Iraq correspondent, Rory Carroll, was last night missing after being kidnapped by gunmen in Baghdad. Carroll, 33, an experienced foreign correspondent, had been conducting an interview in the city with a victim of Saddam Hussein's regime. He had been preparing an article for today's paper on the opening of the former dictator's trial yesterday.

18. I hope Rory Carroll
is released unharmed. He is a damn good journalist who has commented on this illegal war in a balanced manner. This does make me wonder who was behind his abduction.

15. Think of the calls people got.
Your spouse/child/sibling were killed or wounded or captured today.

The shock, fear grief and all the calls made because of the call each got. The rippling effects as word and pain spreads.

19. 4 New Soldier Deaths Announced in Iraq
October 20, 2005, 2:13 AM EDT

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Three U.S. Army soldiers were killed and one was wounded by a roadside bomb in northern Iraq, the military said Thursday.

The blast hit the Task Force Liberty 42nd Infantry Division combat patrol at about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday near Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad, the military said.

The attack raised to at least 1,986 the number of members of the U.S. military who have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

That total includes one 42nd Infantry Division soldier who was killed and four who were wounded when their 42nd Infantry Division vehicle was burned by a roadside bomb that exploded about 6 p.m. Wednesday near Tikrit, 80 miles north of Baghdad, the military said.

20. Will 2,000 be the number that wakes people up?
What is it going to take to get people to put pressure on politicians to stop this nonsense? When will they demand that Bush be impeached over his lies?

Are you suggesting what the poster said isn't true? Because it most certainly is.

By the way, this question is coming from someone who rides the bus and doesn't turn on the heat until November.

I was just genuinely curious because he/she said "They want to drive their big cars and heat their homes with oil.""....as if they were somehow immune to those 2 things and I was curious. Who knows...maybe they work from a solar powered home?
