Khodorkovsky associate Lebedev sent to prison in Russian Arctic

MOSCOW (AP) - Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky's business partner Platon Lebedev has been sent to a prison in the Russian Arctic region of Yamalo-Nenets, a defence lawyer said Wednesday.

Lawyer Yevgeny Baru said that Lebedev's relatives were notified that he had been sent to a prison in the village of Kharp in the remote province, nearly 2,000 kilometres from Moscow.

Following the two men's loss of their appeal against sentences for tax evasion and fraud last month, and news that they had left a Moscow jail, speculation was high about where they had been sent to serve prison sentences.

Under Russian prison regulations, only the penitentiary itself can send confirmation to relatives that prisoners have arrived. Confirmation is sent by mail within 10 days after prisoners are delivered.

The jailing of Lebedev and Khodorkovsky is a disgusting scandal of corruption and power consolidation by Putin. You don't believe everything the mainstream press says about America? So here, you see a news story about Russian businessmen sentenced to prison and automatically assume that they are like the Enron boys of Russia. If you dig at all, you will find that this story has caused outrage among the left, the intellectuals, and people who are interested in fairness and justice in Russia.
