Bush Says Miers Lack of Judicial Background an Asset for Court
Bush Says Miers Lack of Judicial Background an Asset for Court

Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush said he chose White House Counsel Harriet Miers as his U.S. Supreme Court nominee in part because he wanted the court to have the perspective of someone who has never been a judge. ``It's an unusual nomination because she's never been a judge,'' Bush said at a news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today at the White House. ``I picked Harriet for a lot of reasons. One reason is she's never been a judge.'' ...

The top two senators on the Judiciary Committee yesterday criticized the answers that Miers provided on the panel's questionnaire about her background. Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, and ranking Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont asked Miers to resubmit answers to questions about her professional background and service as White House counsel. She has been the subject of criticism from some of Bush's supporters for having no clear record showing her judicial philosophy and no experience on the bench.

Her answers to the Judiciary panel's questions show ``she is not going to legislate from the bench,'' Bush said. ``She will strictly interpret the constitution.''...

When you think about it, untrained surgeons could really bring a new perspective to medicine. Give a drywaller a scalpel and a vital-signs monitor and who knows what magic he can perform!

When are people going to wake up and realize that a complete and utter lack of experience is not a good thing? We have enough examples to prove it: Reagan, Jesse Ventura, Arnold, Bush........

5.0 victim of sexism ("maybe" says Pickles)

6.0 Evangelical christian (oops, Republicans didn't allow that issue for Roberts)

7.0 ardent anti-choice (except when mediating or donating money)

9.0 She's never been a judge

10.0 ?

23. For a position that lasts for life?
If being a judge is so tainting, shouldn't the ones who've done it for a bit get kicked out, by this Bush logic?

Guess what, everyone else has experience at not being a judge, too. It's not as if they got locked up in a court at birth.

Bush must have had this remark prepared for him too - wow, are they desperate in the White House now. Were they laughing when they came up with it, or did they hold their heads in their hands, and moan "it's the only thing left for us to say!"?

30. But of course! He picked a FEMA director who never had any
background in disaster management, because his experience in horse show judging would bring a whole different perspective to the job.

He picked a guy to represent us in the UN based on the qualification that he wanted to dissolve the whole organization, adding an entirely unique perspective to the job.

He picked a secretary of state who had never heard of such a thing as jumbo jets loaded with fuel presenting any kind of threat when combined with terrorist hijackers because she is a whiz on the piano.

And the list goes on and on and on...

But best not do much more though, or you'll become and old hand, and will loose your edge. Why not just go rest yourself on the couch and look gorgeous?"

This is so confusing.... affair or no I just don't see why a president would do this. I just keep thinking back to the "you are the greatest" notes and then Monica Lewinsky flashes into my mind (yuuuuuck)
