Miller Clarifies Security Clearance Issue
October 20, 2005, 7:01 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- New York Times reporter Judith Miller has addressed an issue that raised eyebrows in the journalism community: her statement that she had "clearance to see secret information" while covering the invasion of Iraq.

In a first-person piece last weekend, Miller wrote that because of that status, "I was not permitted to discuss with editors some of the more sensitive information about Iraq."

The statement led some to charge that the Times had allowed Miller to become compromised by the military.

But Miller told the paper for a story published Thursday that her "clearance" was akin to the routine nondisclosure form for all reporters "embedded" with military units, which she signed when she was deployed with the 75th Exploitation Task Force. The unit's job was to find weapons of mass destruction.

2. Judy Miller should get a job at AIPAC
they sure need someone there to spin the AIPAC spy story, or perhaps she can run the PR office for the Iraqi government. She and Chalabi can become chums again.

7. Now why didn't Judy think of that? Oh wait, she did.

Judith Miller is Unnamed Woman in AIPAC Spy Ring Indictment

Page 24 Paragraph numbered 7of the AIPAC Spy Ring Indictment (see below)
http://news.findlaw.com/nytimes/docs/dod/usfrnklin80205ind.pdf

This is in reference to a meeting between FRANKLIN (Larry Franklin) and FO-3 (Naor Gilon) at the Pentagon Officers Athletic Club. The woman referenced is Judith Miller. Miller is a reporter for the New York Times who is as I write held in a Federal Facility in contempt of court. She wrote many now discredited stories on WMDs for the Times. The Charitable work was The Iraqi Jewish Archive which Judith Miller and Harold Rhode cooperated on with Ahmad Chalabi.

I have reason to believe that the conversation between Larry Franklin and Naor Gilon about Judith Miller included a reference to Valerie Plame. This case becomes a time bomb if it is revealed that Mossad had a part in the outing of CIA agent Plame.

11. Well, that's an interesting cast of characters: Larry Franklin, Harold...
Rhodes (of Rome 2001 fame--cooking up of the Niger forgeries), Judith Miller and Ahmad Chalabi. And who's this Naor Gilon? (--not familiar with that one; haven't read that indictment yet). Doing Jewish charitable work. Uh-huh.

Niger forgeries, and how to get WMDs INTO Iraq, I think, was the agenda in Rome. Part one of the WMD-planting theory is that the forgeries and the planting of the Niger allegation in Bush's SOTU speech were bait to the CIA, to commit to a no-nukes-in-Iraq public position, and then to discredit them, when Miller "found" the planted nukes. Part Two is that this dirty little WMD scheme was foiled, possibly by Plame/Brewster-Jennings; David Kelly found out about it; Blair warned Bush; and Plame and her network were then precipitously outed, at high risk to many top Bushites (with calls to at least six journalist witnesses to treason), in a panic over the discovery of their scheme, and possibly in a cold rage over its foiling (or, maybe they were still trying to do it, at that point--July 2003).*

I understand that Fitzgerald has requested an unredacted copy of the Italian Parliament's report on the Rome meeting, and has also requested that AIPAC/Franklin prosecutor McNulty be permitted to see it.

Now I'll go read the AIPAC indictment.

The plot thickens.

--------

*If my reading of the Libby cryptography to Miller is right, they may STILL have plans in that direction. He urges her to "come back to work--and life" in order to cover "the Iranian nuclear program," among other things. ("Biological threats" is another.) Though he is going to take the "fall," all these deeply rooted "aspens" are still churning out their bloody and nefarious schemes. (Yellowcake traceable from Niger to Iraq? Is that what Ghorbanifar was at the meeting for? And now, on to Iran?)

14. Note: Just read the Franklin indictment. It's pretty crpptic. FO =
official of a foreign government. Naor Gilon, and I assume the gov't is Israel. The docs that were being passed to Israel seem to be about Iran and its nuke program (what Libby tells Miller to "come back to work--and life" to write about). And the perps were discussing Miller ("her thoughts" about Iran nukes, presumably), and possibly Plame, in early June 2003. So the main post here is saying.

If the latter is true, then possibly the Plame cabal had a second motive for outing Plame and disabling the entire CIA Brewster-Jennings WMD monitoring program (and probably getting some of its coverts killed)--that Plame, being an honest information-gatherer, would call them on whatever lies they were cooking up about Iran (in order to invade or nuke it, or get the UN or the Europeans to agree to do something). This spy ring seems to have the purpose of widening the ME war.

The plot not only thickens, it grows mind-boggling, like a mountain coming down upon your head.

3. She's running out of excuses......
if she'd just admit she's a bush whore it would all be over with and she could get on with her life. She's going to spend the rest of her life explaining her allegiance to the bushies. She should just confess her transgressions and get it over with.

Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 06:37 PM by Mountainman
WMDs had been found but she wasn't permitted to tell the media that Bushco had planted them. For some reason the plan to plant WMDs failed.

I don't think they would have made all that noise about WMDs if they didn't intend to find them and they knew Saddam had gotten rid of his. I think the story that was told to the UN by Powell was supposed to be true by the act of making it happen (planting the evidence).

Miller was supposed to be on the scene when the planted weapons were found and write the story for the NY Times. She was not to tell anyone that the WMDs came from Bushco and not Saddam.

16. NYT: Miller could have misled sources w/bogus clearance
The NYT actually buried this nugget about Judy's security clearance in their report today about the shield law. I had posted it earlier in the General Discussions forum because I thought the article suggested that:

(1) Judy Miller could have led sources to think that she had a security clearance.

(2) Judy was actually telegraphing to Libby a plausible explanation--that he mistakenly thought she had a clearance and so he related the classified information (Plame's name)to her. This seems very plausible if you review her actual testimony. I should also note that the NYT article differs from Newsday's in that the NYT allows more for the possibility that her clearance was something more than what most reporters had, even though it was similar in many respects. It should be mentioned that NY magazine said that Judy's clearance had to be approved by Donald Rumsfeld.

From the article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/20/national/20shield.htm

"I told Mr. Fitzgerald that Mr. Libby might have thought I still had security clearance, given my special embedded status in Iraq," Ms. Miller wrote, referring to Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor leading the C.I.A. leak investigation.

Some Pentagon officials and journalists questioned whether her arrangement was actually what many journalists covering the Iraq war had: a written agreement to see and hear classified information but treat it as off the record unless an ad hoc arrangement was reached with military hosts.

In a telephone interview Wednesday, Ms. Miller said this so-called nondisclosure form was precisely what she had signed, with some modifications, adding that what she had meant to say in her published account was that she had had temporary access to classified information under rules set by her unit.

Ms. Miller said that under the conditions set by the commander of the unit, Col. Richard R. McPhee, she had been allowed to discuss her most secret reporting with only the senior-most editors of The Times, who at the time were Howell Raines, the executive editor, and Gerald M. Boyd, the managing editor.

When asked if she had ever left the impression with sources, including Mr. Libby, that she had access to classified information after leaving her assignment in Iraq, Ms. Miller said she could not recall. "I don't remember if I ever told him I was disembedded," she said. "I might not have." But she added, "I never misled anybody."
