Religious group brands Fox TV shows as vulgar
Gary Younge in New York
Friday October 21, 2005
The Guardian

Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Channel produces six of the worst shows for family viewing, according to the religious television monitoring group the Parents Television Council. Fox held the top three spots with a new comedy, The War at Home, and two animated series, Family Guy and American Dad. The channel was singled out by the PTC for packaging all three as "family friendly" when the council claimed The War at Home was "one of the most mindless and unapologetically vulgar shows on television" and Family Guy included jokes about necrophilia and masturbation.

1. The PTC...
is a few people who crank out all these 'fake outrage' letters and try to get people run off the air, right?

I hate pressure groups. If you don't like something, just don't watch it.

Oh no! People are making jokes that we don't like! What can we do?!

Um...find a different way to kill time, maybe? Tell your kids to do something else? Go outside?

...Sigh. It'll never work.

:(

2. "Fox News Channel?"
I had my hopes up.
Or does the Fox News Channel produce regular old Fox Tv shows too?

In any case, screw the PTC.

6. It won't work...
Family Gut was originally pulled for those reasons, but once off the air and on DVD Fox realized how profitable the show was because the DVD sales went thru the roof. So they brought the show back with a rather large share of the audience...Fox aint gonna pull it. Especially when you consider Fox's history: Married with Children, Livin' Color, The Simpsons, etc.

8. I hate it
when these people try to legislate thier religious views on the rest of the country. Their "we know whats best for you" attitude makes me very angry. My advice to them DON'T WATCH THOSE SHOWS!!! Let others decide if they want to. Thank god the whole country is not run by these people. Fundies want to take over the country.

7. Irony here is that...
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 09:50 AM by Dunvegan
...this is the very audience demographic (far Right) upon which FOX pinned its success paradigm.

FOX has at all costs made their news a propaganda outlet for the entire far Right coalition.

And now we see a major power play group in FOX's "base" attacking FOX's entertainment programming...programming from which a good deal of FOX advertising revenue is raked in.

FOX NEWS HEADLINE: FOXES EAT THEIR OWN...NO FILM AT 11.

Telephone call for FOX. Murrow's ghost just called to say "Good Night and Bad Luck."

10. Family Guy is also on Cartoon Network
Why aren't they complaining about that? People should pay more attention to what the children are watching and less about the adults. IMO

11. The only thing I can say in FOX's defense is ...
They put Family Guy back on the air. It's a damn good show, and obviously more people enjoy it than hate it. Of course, bringing it back was just another move for profit after they saw the huge success of the show through Adult Swim broadcasts and DVDs.

Ironic.

I don't watch much TV, so I can't speak to the shows - though That 70's show USED to be a good program.

15. Well, there is a disconnect. Were talking Republicans here.
Fox has some of the most tasteless non-family friendly programming on the air, and yet they are decidedly Republican. I hope these oafs will connect the dots and soon?

It's all part of the plan to keep them voting for those who are supposed to clean things up in their mind.

17. Three of my favorites actually...
And it kills me to watch "American Dad" on Fox..its main premise is a super-repub dad and how he is a complete jackass...it is always making fun of the right..

Same with Family Guy really.

Go figure that three of my favorite sit-and-laugh shows are the ones that PTC is comdemning.

21. I never could figure out why people watch things they think is vulgar.
I certainly wouldn't want to watch most of the religious programs, which I find highly offensive.

What wrong with these folks? If the kids like 'em and the parent don't, then block that channel. But kids will always find ways to watch and do what parents try to protect them from.

Why in the fuck don't these asshole grow up??

24. Maybe that was Murdoch's plan
all along: to have the "news" channel condemn what the "entertainment" channel is doing, and to have the "entertainment" channel mock the "news" channel, and wait around to see if anyone notices.

So if I get it right, the entertainment channel is vulgar and hilarious, while the news channel is obscene and absurd.

30. More vulgar than real life?
Worse then..

Right wing fundies crying about the rights of unborn children while rallying behind a president who's against the names and caskets of our war dead being viewed?

The morality police dictating in their robes while molesting children?

People who support the boy king and his cronies because screwing the American public and basically outlawing the U.S. Constitution (while claiming patriotism) is more acceptable than a blowjob?

So-called "Christian" icons who claim homosexuals and pagans are to blame for 9/11?

Telling unemployed American workers, victims of overseas outsourcing, to go back to school, just as funds for education and student loans are being slashed?

Licking frosting like a twisted, gluttonous pig while thousands are dying in Louisiana and Mississippi?

My dear Fundies, I don't tell YOU how to worship in your churches. So leave my television the fuck alone.

PURITANISM: the nagging suspicion that somewhere, somebody is having more fun than you are.

more to lower "values" than the other broadcast networks combined.
