The former communist has a glowing testimonial from George Bush
POLAND will see a remarkable change of guard this weekend as President Kwasniewski, the last senior politician with a communist background, makes way for a centre-right head of state.
More remarkably still, Mr Kwasniewski is heading towards a political afterlife on the international stage. He is being hotly tipped as Washington’s favourite to succeed Kofi Annan as Secretary-General of the United Nations when his term runs out at the end of 2006.
Diplomatic Warsaw is abuzz with rumours that Mr Kwasniewski, a smooth, tennis-playing, polyglot who is seen as one of the champions of New Europe, won US backing on a visit to the White House earlier this month.
Certainly President Bush gave him a glowing public testimonial. “Aleksander has helped to advance the cause of peace by advancing the cause of freedom,” the US leader said.
“He has proven that you can be a friend to the United States and a loyal member of the EU at the same time.”
