Fitzgerald Launches Web Site

By Dan Froomkin
Special to washingtonpost.com
Friday, October 21, 2005; 1:00 PM
----------------------
Special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald has just launched his own brand-new Web site. http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/iln/osc/index.html

Could it be that he's getting ready to release some new legal documents? Like, maybe, some indictments? It's certainly not the action of an office about to fold up its tents and go home.

Fitzgerald spokesman Randall Samborn minimized the significance of the Web launch in an interview this morning.

"I would strongly caution, Dan, against reading anything into it substantive, one way or the other," he said. "It's really a long overdue effort to get something on the Internet to answer a lot of questions that we get . . . and to put up some of the documents that we have had ongoing and continued interest in having the public be able to access."

OK, OK. But will the Web site be used for future documents as well?

"The possibility exists," Samborn said.

"The possibility exists"

Among the documents currently available on the site:

* A Feb. 6, 2004, follow-up confirming that his mandate "includes the authority to investigate and prosecute violations of any federal laws related to the underlying alleged unauthorized disclosure, as well as federal crimes committed in the course of, and with intent to interfere with, your investigation."

42. And that is absolutely KEY--WORLD WIDE
Everyone will know that we went to war on a big fat fucking lie. That all of the dead died for BULLSHIT. That our Commander in Thief is a fucking asshole, and that he needs to be impeached. And Judy, Chalabi and everyone else involved in this brutal charade need to be hunted down like the filthy insects that they are, and brought to justice.

76. Agreed. Although more Americans than 'world' need to be educated.
I think 'world' already is way ahead of most of our own citizens.

It's just excellent though that it's out there for all to see.

Fitzgerald has hefty admiration from this US citizen and I'll be writing to tell him so.

Just today an ex-coworker of mine calls me at work screaming about how crooked Tom DeLay is. We live in Houston and after reading everything in today's newspaper (The Houston Chronicle) he was ready to kill the man. He was highly upset about DeLay's smile in his mugshot too. Now mind you I had been telling this guy for the past 1 year about how crooked our government is especially Tom DeLay. Now he can't read enough. Since, he is a newbie. I sent him this link for starters. http://www.alternet.org/story/13152

I hope this won't make me an accomplice to murder.

108. I alternate between ranting and forgiving on this because
while citizens should take an interest and stay informed, it's difficult to do with corporate media and the amount of time left at the end of most peoples' day.

While my husband was laid off (his job outsourced, of course) he was very active with me in reading and writing and discussing in order to get the word out. Now that he's back to working, 9 hour days most days and an hour commute each way, he's lucky to get the major headlines on tv and/or radio news.

It's precisely because time is so limited for people that news agencies should be working harder to get the info out there short, sweet and truthful!

I think the media is the first place to attack when we talk about uninformed Americans. Add Fox to that mix and it's no wonder we're living among a majority of uninformed Americans. While the internet is great for getting to truth, it's still unavailable to oh so many rurals and poor who have no access.

appreciate that there are a HEFTY percentage of us here who think this whole charade was disgraceful. The site will go a long way towards mending fences around the globe, and showing that the rule of law is not totally dead despite the chimp dictatorship.

37. Indeed. I can't imagine he'd be setting up a website NOW, as the
GJ is about to expire, and I believe I remember something about him not issuing a report if there aren't indictments (I think it was Leslie Stahl who said that on Steven Colbert's new show, earlier this week), if he were just gonna close up shop and move on to the next assignment. Would he? Could it be indicative that he expects a LOT of chatter traffic and questions because there's a lot more to come? I mean, there would certainly be a gush of questions and comments (and complaints from folks like us) if he announced no indictments, at least for a little while, but that wouldn't be something sustainable over a longer term, would it?

It could well be a signal that there's more to come.

I'm so reluctant to get all excited. I have had my heart broken over this asshole bunch of thugs and pirates since December, 2000, it's just hard to believe that we'd get a break for once.

Gotta say a prayer to St. Jude (patron saint of hopeless cases).

69. Website specifically for the Office of Special Council, with Patrick
Fitzgerald, Special Prosecutor in big old bold letters across the top of the page.

So it's possible that he's closing down the SP process & turning stuff over to local Feds, but they are not going to be using this particular website.

Again, why put it up now and why ask for all mail to be sent to the Washington office if you're expecting to pack your bags and go home in seven days?

Head fake? Maybe.

Maybe not.

21. The Red Shield of England knows who is in the cave.
"The Boojum was described as a strange creature, neither man nor beast. A giant of a creature who generally traveled about at twilight and dusk. No Man, twas said, had ever got a real good look at the Boojum. No one had ever run upon the giant face-to-face. Atleast if they had, they had never lived to tell of it.

But there were stories of folks having seen the Boojum from afar, a ghostly shape etched against the sky from a perch on Plott Balsam.

Some figured it was only a giant bear.

But the legend grew as all legends do. "

The muddying of the waters has been in full force ever since Fitzgerald stepped into the picture, and it's getting worse. Lies, rumors, and disinformation have been rampant.

Now we'll be able to say, "Just go to Fitzgerald's web site," when someone claims something that isn't true about the investigation.

Damn, the man is savvy. This is a sharp move on his part.

edit to add, I just went to the site and read the August 12, 2005 Delegation of Authority and actually got giggly, LOL.

Sorting through all the rumors, good and bad assumptions, and assorted punditry riffs, this is a good sign directly from the horses - or should I say 'bulldog's? - mouth. This appears to be a determined and methodical man gdetting ready for the next round, which would be a controlled flow of information. It is also a way for him to avoid having to deal directly with the media, an activity he's clearly more comfortable avoiding.

You gotta love a dteremined man who eschews the limelight in favor of worklights.

We're countin' on ya, Mr. Fitzgerald.

43. It's a psychological ploy
My guess - and this is just a wild guess - is that Fitzgerald is trying to pressure certain witnesses into making deals to avoid indictment and public humiliation. Putting up a website is his little way of telling witnesses, "oh, really? You think I won't have the guts to indict you and publically destroy you unless you testify against Mr./Ms. X???"

Getting people to come forward and tell the truth against such a close-knit administration must be an ugly business. This Fitzgerald is a very creative person.

41. Wow, very good news...
Surely an indication that Fitz is just getting started........

From the website:

Miller Brief July 2005 Page 9

On July 3, 2005 Steve Chapman, a member of the editorial board of Chicago Tribune, opined in " Special Privileges and Reporters":

The editor of Time Inc. made news the other day by offering to do what most of us take for granted: Obey the law. Its about time..... "The same constitution that protects the freedom of the press requires obedience to the final decisions of the courts," said editor Norman Pearlstein - an insight that has eluded many of his fellow journalist.

That would include New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who claims the prerogative of deciding for herself what information the Grand Jury is entitled to hear, and whose publisher backs her up......

Journalist like nothing better than exposing self-seeking behavior by special interests who case nothing for the public good. In this case, they can find it by looking in the mirror.

This is from his bio on his other website. Guess I need reassurance that he isn't too chummy with *.

Patrick J. Fitzgerald
Patrick J. Fitzgerald began serving as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois on September 1, 2001. The United States Senate confirmed his nomination by unanimous consent and President Bush signed his commission on October 29, 2001.

Mr. Fitzgerald served on the Attorney General's Advisory Committee from 2001-2005 and was Chair of the sub-committee on terrorism. He is also a member of the President's Corporate Fraud Task Force. In December 2003, he was named Special Counsel to investigate the alleged disclosure of the identity of a purported employee of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Although, I have been wondering for some time now why the bushistas allowed Fitz to get this assignment. Perhaps the stupidest decision they ever made.

70. The Wall Street Journal doesn't seem to think it's a big deal....
"In contrast to the Times report, John D. McKinnon, Anne Marie Squeo and Joe Hagan of the Wall Street Journal sees signs that Fitzgerald "may be exploring whether to charge White House officials with leaking garden-variety classified information. . . .".

GARDEN VARIETY CLASSIFIED INFORMATION? :wtf:

Leaking the name of a covert CIA Agent, blowing the cover of her complete operation and the dummy company it operated through and putting every Agent connected to that operation is GARDEN VARIETY classified information. She and her cohorts were working on finding weapons of mass destruction, the linchpin of bush's Iraq attack. The fucking Wall Street Journal has always been Republican shill fish-wrap, but they're really exposing their partisanship here. It's pitiful and further destroys any remaining credibility they had.

Yeah, the WSJ just LOVES their bush, all of those juicy, fat tax cuts for the super rich who are creating SOOOOOO many jobs. :eyes: From time to time I get unsolicited letters asking me to subscribe to their bird cage liner. I always send it back, postage paid, with a big, "FUCK YOU" written in huge black letters across it. They're not smart enough to catch on I guess, they keep sending them. Assholes! :grr:

Except the 5 documents listed now are all Acrobat files. Why would they need instructions on other formats unless they're planning to post more documents? :bounce: Spreadsheets & Powerpoint! So those are the days considered highest for the issuance of indictments. The Grand Jury must wrap up by October 28th, unless Fitz files for an extension. Next Monday is the 24th, Wed is the 26th and Friday is the 28th. I'm betting it will come Mon. or Wednesday.

I went there a few hours ago and clicked on the 12/30/03 link, no problem. Then I tried the 2/6/04 link and everything froze at that point. Tried to get Task Mgr to shut it down, but task manager just kept multiplying and blinking. Then I tried to just shut down my machine from the start menu, but it couldn's seem to close the open windows. I got worried about just what was going on with my computer and finally just shut it off at the power switch.

But I went there five minutes ago - no problem.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Prosecutors investigating the outing of a covert CIA operative opened a Web site on Friday to post possible indictments next week and were said by lawyers in the case to be focusing on whether top White House aides tried to conceal their actions from investigators.

Karl Rove, President George W. Bush's top political adviser, and Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, are at the center of special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation into who leaked the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

The lawyers, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Fitzgerald appeared likely to bring charges next week in the nearly two-year leak investigation.

Indictment Etiquette:
"A slightly disheveled, tired look might be more appropriate, reflecting the stress of being under so much scrutiny — but don’t look too tired. Most important, do not come in stinking of last night’s gin."

83. Three Deputy Special Counsels working beneath Patrick Fitzgerald
according to the legal briefs where their names appear: James P. Fleissner, Debra Riggs Bonamici, and Kathleen Kedian. I was afraid that the Bush Administration might have been able to infiltrate Fitzgerald's legal team through at least one of the attorney's working under Fitzgerald. I guess Fitzgerald runs a very tight ship and that he knows his deputies. It would be interesting to get a little background information on these other attorneys who are also handling this vast and complex investigation.

87. Fitzgerald is laying out the investigation's legitimacy
You notice that the first documents that are posted reassert that he has the legal authority to indict and to follow the investigation where it leads. He is establishing the legitimacy of the investigation, including the Supreme Court's declining to hear an appeal in the Judy Miller proceedings. He is carefully laying out his authority and the legitimacy of the investigation ahead of the indictments to buttress the inevitable claims from the Right Wing partisan machine that he is somehow exceeding his authority or going off on a witch hunt. It's not only leverage; he's cutting the legs out from under the spin that will attempt to frame this as an over-reaching prosecution over politics as usual. This is a savvy gentleman. He is fully aware of about what is to transpire and the desperate attack machine it will unleash. We are on the eve of something big.

Special Prosecutor in CIA Leak Case Starts Web Site

By Carol D. Leonnig
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, October 22, 2005; A06

The prosecutor investigating the leak of a CIA operative's identity put up an official Web site for making public announcements yesterday, fueling the belief of lawyers involved in the case that he will announce charges against some administration officials next week.

Special counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald told attorneys for administration officials late last week that he was nearing decisions about possible charges. Without fanfare, the office put up a site at http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/iln/osc .

"It sure doesn't look like he's folding up his tent and going home without some charges," said one lawyer involved in the case who asked not to be identified.

White House officials have said they are bracing for the possibility Rove, Libby and perhaps lower-level administration officials could be indicted.
