Bush Compares Terror War to Reagan's Fight
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. Oct 21, 2005 — President Bush on Friday compared the war against terrorism to Ronald Reagan's battle against communism and vowed that the United States would prevail over Islamic extremists just as it did in the showdown with the Soviet Union.

"Like the ideology of communism, Islamic radicalism is doomed to fail," Bush said.

The president spoke at the ribbon-cutting of a pavilion featuring a gleaming Air Force One at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. He participated in a wreath-laying at the grave of the revered Republican and basked in warm wishes from former first lady Nancy Reagan.
...
"We will prevail in the war on terror because this generation is determined to meet the threats of our time," the president said. "We understand our duty; we understand our responsibility to the American people."........

1. Ah jeez, that just makes me want to yak.
Is Bunnypants so desperate he's trying to instill his own assessment of his presidency? If so, I believe a comparison to the Damien (The Omen) might be more appropriate.

11. He Was a Little Shocked, Though...
I watched a few minutes of Nancy Reagan's speech and got a kick out of the part where she mentioned Ronnie and her last trip home on AFI, after his term was up, and said it was "Mission Accomplished."

GW jerked his head and gave her the funniest look. ;-) He wasn't sure what to make of it until he heard a little more of her speech and saw that it wasn't a jab toward him....well, it might have been, knowing Nancy can't stand him.

9. Well he is comparing one lie to another lie.
The lies are about different things, but the Bush war on terror is essentially the same scheme as the Reagan war on terror.

6. Except that GWB has done nothing but reinforce "Islamic radicalism"
Besides, Reagan stole Truman's thunder. The groundwork for victory over the Soviets was actually laid years earlier, with the Marshall Plan. Reagan is responsible only for undertaking a very risky arms race, that could have just easily turned ugly.

12. This is an ironic statement if you look at history
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 08:39 PM by seasat
The cold war aided in the creation of the terrorists. In the name of battling communism (and supporting oil corps) we overthrew the government of Iraq and Iran. We supported dictatorial regimes in the middle east such as Saudi Arabia. We supplied the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan with weapons then left the country to war ravaged poverty and the Taliban when the Soviets left. Part of reason we have these terrorists today is our very policies during the cold war provided the conditions under which the Islamic radicals could recruit. We tend to have short term memories here in the US and think those folks over there would forget some of the wrongs we did in proxy wars versus the Soviets but they remember and will carry those scars for generations. Shrub Inc responds to these overwhelming historical precedents by starting another war in Iraq that will further add fuel to the fire. He's repeating the mistakes of the cold war but on a larger scale.

Manufactured intelligence, complicit media, propaganda.

All to create an execuse for a militarized America and interventions to enforce our imperial will.

The only difference is that instead of turning another empire into the boogeyman, they are now turning various muslim groups into boogeymen.

You are so correct. Reagan had bin Laden as a guest (a freedom fighter then) in the White House. He gave them the very stingers they were using when we invaced Afghanistan. Maybe they do have a lot in common after all.

Let people be reminded that Reagan and Poppy supported the "Islamo-terrorists" in the 80s because they considered them an effective enemy against the Soviets.

Bush is painting himself into corners so quickly that it's making me dizzy just watching him.

19. Bush recently compared himself to FDR and Churchhill, fighting Nazis
Before that, at a dedication of the Lincoln Library where he spoke, he compared himself to Abraham Lincoln, saying that both of them were heavily criticized by eastern journalists during a time of war. Before that, in a speech given in Las Vegas, Bush compared himself to Thomas Jefferson. Now Bush has become Ronald Reagan.

I guess it's too much to ask for Bush to just be himself, because inside there's no one home.

21. Comparing himself to Lincoln, FDR, and Churchill is evidence of delusional
personality. Perhaps we should get a judge to commit Bush to a mental institution before he harms himself or others.

I can't hardly wait for Bush to refer to himself as the returned Christ!

29. he copies living people, as well ...
He saw that the voters approved of McCain's populist "reformer with results" pitch, and he copied that. He realized that he couldn't very well go around saying "I like pollution" -- so he pretended to be an environmental expert like Al Gore (with the spin that only people rich enough to own property ought to decide about conservation). And now he shows up at Habitat projects, puts in a couple of minutes of "hard work" in front of the cameras, and acts like he's Jimmy Carter.

The guy owns more costumes than the Village People! When a 5-year-old dresses up as a pilot or a baseball player, it's cute. In a 59-year-old man, that's just bizarre.

20. "Bush Compares his Terror War to Reagan's Fight with Alzheimer's
Alzheimer's: People in the middle stages of AD may forget how to do simple tasks like brushing their teeth or combing their hair. They can no longer think clearly. They can fail to recognize familiar people and places. They begin to have problems speaking, understanding, reading, or writing. Later on, people with AD may become anxious or aggressive, or wander away from home. Eventually, patients need total care.

I'm sorry but bush has problems speaking, understanding, reading or writing and becomes anxious and aggressive and wander far from home.

25. Ah the irony..50 years of cold war happens to end during Reagan's term
and Bush managed to undo it in his 1st. The buildup started again the day that idiot cowboy gave his speech about the axis of evil. He undid what the rw idiots claim as the crowning glory of Reagan. Lets face it. Reagan just happened to be president when Russia went broke. Ironically a long unsuccessful war with Afghanistan didn't help their finances. The parallels are frightening.

34. where myths take wing
"...basked in warm wishes from former first lady Nancy Reagan."

Oh, he did did he. I didn't see any quotes.

I guess they had to fit the word 'bask' into the story 'cause ...

"the library event was marred by fog that settled in over Simi Valley, shrouding the glassed-in pavilion at the hilltop library. Visibility was so bad that the audience could hear but couldn't see F-16 fighter jets that flew by to end the event."

almost seems symbolic

did he mention Iran-Contra? some of the same characters are at play ... is that the common denominator??

the Gropinator was a no show (too busy)

trying to find a comparison that "sticks"

he's compared it to the American Revolution, World War I, and World War II so far and now the cold war?

{{{sigh}}} - well, he still has (in no particular order) the Whiskey rebellion, War of 1812, Spanish-American War, Civil War, Mexican-American War, Korean War, Persian Gulf war (part one), and Vietnam war still available for comparisons -- (did I leave any out?)

well, I'll cut him a slight break - it's hard work to keep the lies spinning
