UN office doctored report on murder of Hariri
THE United Nations withheld some of the most damaging allegations against Syria in its report on the murder of Rafik Hariri, the former Lebanese Prime Minister, it emerged yesterday.

The names of the brother of Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria, and other members of his inner circle, were dropped from the report that was sent to the Security Council.

The confidential changes were revealed by an extraordinary computer gaffe because an electronic version distributed by UN officials on Thursday night allowed recipients to track editing changes.

The mistaken release of the unedited report added further support to the published conclusion that Syria was behind Mr Hariri’s assassination in a bomb blast on Valentine’s Day in Beirut. The murder of Mr Hariri touched off an international outcry and hastened Syria’s departure from Lebanon in April after a 29-year pervasive military presence.

2. Oops. Did they use Windows Word?
Apparently you can hack a word doc and see previous version.

Download free pdf making software and use that when distributing documents.

8. how conveeeenient !
never mind the edit was probably because there wasn't the evidence to back up the claim of course. and never mind the bush administration ROUTINELY alters/revises/adjusts/changes/rethinks and simply doesn't release reports that don't suit ITS political aims. and never mind that they don't really care one fiddly fork at all about the issue at hand. its just a piss poor excuse to try and drum up support for another war. only this time its pretty hard to imagine any other nation than possibly britain jumping into this particular adventure.

10. What Crap-The UN and the US want to go after Syria
That includes France. Hariri was an Arab nationalist. In no way did his assassination benefit Syria. This was a hit job by others who want to fracture the Middle East.

In 2000, Wurmser helped draft a document entitled “Ending Syria’s Occupation of Lebanon: the US Role?” It called for a confrontation with the regime in Damascus, which it accused of developing “weapons of mass destruction.” Among those signing the document were Feith and Perle, as well as Elliott Abrams, Bush’s chief advisor on the Middle East, who was recently appointed deputy national security advisor.

This document urged the use of US military force, claiming that the 1991 Persian Gulf War had proven that Washington “can act to defend its interests and principles without the specter of huge casualties.” It continued: “But this opportunity may not wait, for as weapons-of-mass-destruction capabilities spread, the risks of such action will rapidly grow. If there is to be decisive action, it will have to be sooner rather than later.”

If one asks the question, “Who benefits?” the answer is clear. The destabilization of Lebanon, the mobilization of the US-backed opposition to the pro-Syrian government in Beirut, and the vilification of Damascus all serve to advance US and Israeli strategic plans long in the making.

11. I see no profit for Syria by killing the Lebanese official.
Further, the Syrian ambassador made a rather convincing case today on TV stating that there was no proof of the accusations. Who knows?
But, something seems "fishy" about the document.

13. Looks like the U.S. is attempting to kill two birds with one stone.
Build up the war with Syria while discrediting Kofi Annan and the U.N. I wouldn't be surprised if John Bolton and the CIA were linked into thier computers. Nothing is beyond believing with this administration.
