10. If by "party" you mean "wake"
Then you'd be dead-on. And not one of those Irish wakes either, but one of those seriously depressing Why Us, God? wakes.

Two thousand is just one digit closer to three thousand, and I, like most Americans, don't see an end to the numbers rolling forward anytime soon.

4. I remember waiting for 500 deaths of American soldiers
We've been sitting this death watch for so long, and there is no end in sight. Hopefully these horrible milestones serve the purpose of shaking the country out of it's lethargy. I don't think it's "support our troops" as much as "I can't think for myself" I'm sitting here visiting my daughter who is active army. She lives in military housing.

There are very few political bumper stickers here, just the generic yellow ribbons. Many of them say simply "Keep my husband safe" One of the saddest things I've seen.

The death count of all human beings in this atrocity is painfully intolerable to contemplate.

5. The psychological ...
cost for the troops has to be high.

It is neither the world war, in which one went and stayed until a conventional war was over, nor a Vietnam, in which one went (usually) for one tour and then had it behind them.

It is in and out, in and out.

I think the U.S. is going to have a generation of shattered veterans whose numbers may dwarf those of the Vietnam War.

Awful.

8. MarsThe Cat I understand the sentiment...
but I hate the sarcasm here.. not you... just the sarcastic comment...

I have a couple of friends over there and I check everyday the casualty reports.

It's hard to accept any form of light heartedness here...

I don't mean to offend.
