Venezuela's Foreign Min: EU Can Oversee Upcoming Election
Venezuela's foreign minister said Monday that election observers from the European Union would be allowed to oversee upcoming congressional elections in the South American nation.
Ali Rodriguez made the announcement following a meeting with EU External Relation Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner in Brussels, Belgium, according to the state-run Bolivarian News Agency.
Elections to pick members of Venezuela's 167-seat National Assembly are slated for Dec. 4.
Ruling party lawmakers currently control 53% of the assembly. President Hugo Chavez has vowed to increase that majority to two-thirds, which would allow his government to easily pass constitutional reforms.
Arguing that Venezuela's elections council is biased in favor of pro-Chavez candidates, several opposition groups had demanded the presence of the European Union during the upcoming vote.
