Bomb components found at San Diego airport
Tue Oct 25, 2005 12:08 PM ET167

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Baggage screeners found bomb components in a carry-on piece of luggage at San Diego International Airport on Tuesday and cleared the area to investigate, Department of Homeland Security spokesmen said.

A department spokesman said the screeners found "all components of an IED" (improvised explosive device) in a piece of luggage at around 7:45 a.m. (10:45 a.m. EDT)

They then evacuated the commuter terminal of the airport and bomb specialists began to investigate, the spokesman said.

Transportation Security Administration spokesman Nico Melendez said an employee noticed a "suspicious item" in a piece of luggage as it was going through the X-ray machine.

Update: False Alarm, as per CBS radio news at Noon CDT
Upon further inspection, the suspicious items were a toy and an unidentified organic substance.

My advise: Don't panic...it's organic!

30. New Homeland Security Alert System

Simply replace the words "terrorist attack" with "indictments against senior White House officials."

It's on orange now, but Chertoff expects to raise the level to red this afternoon. Then all bets are off.

As I posted on another thread:
The little boy has cried wolf too often. When he talks about terror now, it's a parody of himself. He needs more than talk to divert attention now. He needs something to happen. An attack on the homeland would certainly scare the populace, silence his critics and allow him to finally deploy troops here in the United States. Another "trifecta" he can hit...

41. Toy, Cookie Are Mistaken for Bomb Parts (San Diego Airport)
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/10/25/national/a102640D26.DTL

A terminal at San Diego International Airport was evacuated Tuesday after luggage screeners mistook a child's toy and a cookie for bomb-making components, officials said.

A screening machine at the Commuter Terminal detected what appeared to be bomb-making material in a carryon bag around 7:45 a.m., said Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Jennifer Peppin.

A bomb squad was called to the terminal, which serves regional flights, and investigators determined the bag did not contain any "IED," or improvised explosive devices, Peppin said.

"Essentially what they did find was a child's toy and some organic material in a bag that turned out to be a cookie," Peppin said. "Those two items combined on-screen, they very much appeared to be an IED, and it turned out not to be."

58. Toy car, cookie shut down Lindbergh Field's commuter terminal
Last modified Tuesday, October 25, 2005 11:05 AM PDT

Toy car, cookie shut down Lindbergh Field's commuter terminal

By: North County Times

SAN DIEGO ---- The commuter terminal at Lindbergh Field in San Diego was evacuated for about an hour this morning when a toy car and a cookie in a carry-on bag looked suspicious during screening, officials said.

The discovery came on the heels of nonspecific threats phoned earlier to the Long Beach Municipal Airport and John Wayne Airport in Orange County, said Jennifer Peppin, national Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman. Peppin said no airport in this county was threatened.

However, the screening device at Lindbergh's small commuter terminal picked up what looked like something that could be a homemade explosive and "organic material" in a carry-on bag, Peppin said... The entire terminal, which also contains the airport authority's administrative headquarters, was evacuated about 7:45 a.m., said Steve Shultz, airport security spokesman. The two large terminals continued operations.

Special Agent Jan Caldwell, FBI spokeswoman, said the possible homemade explosive turned out to be a computer board in a toy radio car being taken to the Philippines. Peppin said the organic material was the cookie.

Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 02:05 PM by Davis_X_Machina
...bringing a good Yankee corned beef -- the gray kind -- back to the Deep South for an expatriates' St. Patrick's party, I made the mistake of wrapping the squarish corned beef in about ten layers of tinfoil, and then packing in in my carry-on luggage together with my alarm clock.

Even in the late '70's that was enough for the x-ray equipment.

They tore the package apart -- brine and such all over everything.

No Gitmo in those days, though....

68. That's pretty goofy
My husband once travelled for business with some electronics equipment that had a pressurization component. TSA didn't really like that too much, made him take it apart.

I have a prosthetic and I got dusted for explosives the last time I flew. It was pretty ridiculous- what makes them assume someone with a disability or orthopedic appliance is more likely to blow up a plane? If I wanted to blow up a plane, why would it matter which leg I blew up? They didn't check my "good" leg.

GOtta tell you, the more "security" I encounter, the less safe I feel.

70. Stuff happens. One guard tried to stop a Medal of Honor.
Joe Foss, WWII hero, was going to a convention and was wearing his MOH. The airport guard thought it was a martial arts throwing star and would not let him board. The matter was straightened out.

Cookie and toy car in carry-on bag are culprits
By Michael Stetz

Blame Keebler, not al-Qaeda.

The carry-on bag just happened to have the right mix of items to alarm screeners, said Jennifer Peppin, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration.

Screening machines can't give a complete picture of what's inside luggage. In this case, she said she believed that the toy car had wires and a battery. That alarmed screeners.

Then it was determined that the carry-on also included an organic material. Organic materials, such as fertilizer, are used to make bombs. There was no way to know it was a cookie.

"It was the recipe for a bomb," Peppin said. "It was the kind of perfect mix of items. Fortunately, it was benign. But we didn't know that."

Other airports have seen similar scares, she said. In Dallas, screeners thought they saw a pipe bomb in a passenger's luggage. It turned out to be a microphone.
