Dangers of paedophile priests were ignored by Irish church

The Times October 26, 2005
By David Sharrock, Ireland Correspondent

TWENTY-ONE Irish Catholic priests sexually assaulted young boys and girls in parishes across Co Wexford over a period of 40 years, a damning report into clerical abuse revealed yesterday.
The Irish Government said that it would take immediate action to implement the recommendations of the report into the Diocese of Ferns, which is now regarded as the world’s leading centre for clerical sexual abuse.

The 271-page report catalogues 100 complaints of abuse, with one priest responsible for 26 assaults. The Ferns Report, which investigated allegations dating back to 1966, concluded that Church authorities, the medical profession and society in general failed to appreciate the horrendous damage which the sexual abuse of children causes. The report revealed that police investigations were wholly inadequate, while bishops in the Diocese of Ferns failed to take basic precautions to protect children....

And Rick Santorum said that in Boston, the liberals made'em do it.
Maybe it was the Boston Irish Catholic liberals, right Rick?

2. The Vatican's mouthpiece blamed the licentiousness of the US...
...a couple of years ago. It was quite the news conference: the priest, whoever he was, actually shook his finger at the media for their impertinence in pressing the question. He was obviously angered, and just as obviously wanted to blame someone else, anyone else: the victims (of course), other countries, other cultures. What are they going to say about the sexually-repressed Irish?

The Roman Catholic Church has utterly betrayed the trust of its members. The priesthood is composed of human men, not gods, and men must be held accountable for their actions. This is not a church/state separation issue at all -- especially in a place like Ireland, where as far as I know the entire school system is run by religious groups and none are secular. (Will someone please correct me if they have more current information?)

I don't know what it's going to take for the institution to get a grip on it's obligations, but the number of young priests and nuns has dropped off precipitiously, they're losing lay members rapidly, and those that remain are suffering. It's a true scandal and shame.

5. Pope Maledict Continues to Protect the Pedophiles in the Clergy
It is only going to get worse for the forseeable future.

Pope Maledict continues to blame the victims and the press for daring to talk about child abuse by his priests.
He rewarded Cardinal Bernard Law(less) for his part in protecting the offending clerics with a very prominent role in JP2's funeral -- this after Law was brought to the Vatican to protect him from arrest here.

He has added the new wrinkle of blaming gay priests for the whole
problem, and using that as a pretext for a purge of all suspected gays
from the priesthood (now in progress).
