WP: New Push for Miers Is in the Works (maybe a speech by Miers)
Speech by Nominee Among Moves Being Considered by White House

The Bush administration, concerned that vocal critics are wounding Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers while she quietly prepares for her Senate hearing 12 days from now, is considering ways to fight back -- possibly by having her make a speech -- sources familiar with the discussions said yesterday.

Some presidential advisers and senators think it would be unwise for Miers to speak out before the hearing, and it was unclear yesterday how strongly key decision-makers were considering the idea of her making a speech, according to three people who have discussed the matter with White House officials. But the fact that presidential aides are considering the unorthodox tactic of having a court nominee speak publicly in advance of a Senate confirmation hearing is a sign of the concern surrounding the appointment, the sources said.

Miers's supporters are frustrated by the steady attacks by conservative groups and commentators and would like the White House to defend her more aggressively. "I think certainly, either before or during the hearing, people need to know a little bit more about who she is and what motivates her," John Cornyn (R-Tex.), Miers's most outspoken Senate backer, told reporters. "She has been caricatured because other people have spoken about her, but she really hasn't spoken for herself."

A Senate source familiar with White House discussions said that "the idea she should make a speech is a big deal" among strategists. The source, who would speak only on background because of the sensitive nature of the discussions, said a number of lawmakers advised against the idea but it had not been ruled out.

2. Boy they just don't get it, do they? They have had their way for so long
from stolen elections, to lies leading to war, to cover ups of criminal pasts, to shady (if not criminal) financial dealings...the corruption is so pervasive and has gone unquestioned for so long that they think they can do anything, and it will all just be ducky, nobody questions them!! It's all just an inside-the-beltway story anyhow, nobody really cares in mid-'Murka-Jesusland....

5. IMO, Miers is simply running interference
to take the MSM focus off the coming Fitzmas, the failure of FEMA and irresponsibility regarding katrina, and the 2,000 deaths of our servicemen.

I've had a hard time accepting that IdiotBoy was really serious about having Miers on SCOTUS. It's just been more of the smae BS when things are going badly for the WH Gang.

6. This would be absolutely ridiculous
SCOTUS hopefuls do not need to go out courting votes from the public. She needs to spend her time studying Roberts' playbook--the Constitution and forget about trying to please the chimp masters.

8. Does a speech belong in the process?
I dunno--speeches seem to be for politicians who are, erm...elected, generally, not appointed. And a confirmation of a justice should be based upon a review of one's resume.. (hmm, that doesn't seem to do it) and background (oh...er...) and possibly questions of fitness ("The most brilliant man I ever met." "The best governor ever--worthy of great respect." Sheesh.) It should be about qualifications, not popularity. Do they believe having this woman talk in front of people as if (lapsed memberships, Texas, D.c. Bar, GTECH, overpaid on real estate deal, etc..) it would end public scrutiny would help her? I don't think so. There are people who equate such press with bad news.

The White House strategery seems to be suffering of late.

13. Is she supposed to bat her eyelashes
and throw kisses to Bush? Ass kissing seems to be her main qualification as far as Chimpy is concerned. The man has an ego that seems to know no boundaries. She, from what I can tell, seems perfectly content to stroke his ego. Let them rent a room, then, and not inflict her on the rest of us. I am so tired of his never ending list of cronies to fill positions that require real ability, not Bush Adoration 101.

There's no way this'll do them any damned good. It can only piss everyone on all sides off. I hope they go for it. Maybe she can stand outside that church in NOLA or the hospice in Florida.

Advisors are telling Bush** to give it up and he is stomping his foot saying NO NO NO! Temper tantrums must rule the day in the White House.

25. Would this be Miers v4.0?
Actually letting the nominee speak? Very daring.

Or they're counting on her wilting as an excuse to withdraw her?
