RENO, Nev. (AP) - Sen. Harry Reid paid tribute Tuesday to 13 Nevada soldiers killed in Iraq in a war he says has been marred by flawed intelligence, poor planning and President Bush's desire to "reshape the Middle East through the force of arms."
In a Senate floor speech coinciding with the 2,000th U.S. military death in Iraq, the Democratic leader said a few words about each of the 13 Nevadans killed in the war.
They include one young man killed 10 days before he was to have returned home to Las Vegas, one who died on his father's birthday, another who graduated from high school just a year ago and a 37-year-old corporal known in his unit as "Pops," Reid said.
Attempting to put a personal face on each, the senator also singled out a lance corporal from Sparks who left behind two young sons, another whose immigrant parents escaped Communist rule in Czechoslovakia and a private who was determined to join the Army despite suffering a snowboarding injury that left him with a steel plate in his arm.
