WP: Negroponte Unveils Intelligence Strategy
Bolstering the growth of democracy in other countries has joined countering terrorism and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction as the top strategic missions for the nation's intelligence agencies, according to a document released yesterday by Director of National Intelligence John D. Negroponte.

Titled "The National Intelligence Strategy of the United States," the publication publicly sets out for the first time the strategic missions laid out by the director of national intelligence for the country's 15 agencies.

Negroponte said the strategic mission to "bolster the growth of democracy and sustain peaceful democratic states" is aimed at providing policymakers with information to alert them as to how countries are progressing toward democracy, allowing them to understand the "success or failure to achieve good governance." Although he did not mention Iraq, it would appear that the need to understand that country's progress would fit his description.

Negroponte said mission priorities as described in the document have not changed for the agencies, but two former senior intelligence officials said yesterday one involving democracy appeared new.

... promoting democracy means more fixing elections and more meddling in third-world countries to create right-wing US client states.

Why are they even considering this when the one they've got on the go is a mess. Expect more of the same.

7. This “democracy” angle is utter BS.
There are so many “first of alls” that popped into my head upon reading that crap, I can’t vouch for the priority. These are all at the top of my “Democracy Hypocrisy” list:

1) The USA is not a true democracy. No one man, one vote here (even if they were legitimately counted.) We have that pesky Electoral College throwback to the real definition of Republican that, what is the word or phrase? Massages. Mediates. Nullifies. If I still haven’t found the right word, it doesn’t matter because we don’t have a true model of democracy to spread, infect or force by whatever democratic niceties we choose to package them.

2) The GOP’s reluctance to remove the Patriot Act provisions limiting civil rights after 9/11, let alone their contempt for Democrat sponsored Congressional hearings on abuses of civil rights brought on by the Patriot Act would be outright laughable if the consequences were not so tragic.

3) The US is the ONLY nation that allows private third party corporations to count or manage the votes for our highest office by means that are not open to public scrutiny or valid paper ballot recounts.

OK. Those were the first things the popped into my head. My list would continue with all the mismanaged government actions and legislations that suddenly appeared when the US became a one party system of government under the guise of a puppet dictator that ultimately takes his orders from a neo-con cabal whose first priority is ensuring their personal wealth and well-being above that of the citizens at large.

OK, they get a technical “slither” on that account because they know they were not duly elected and therefore cannot be held accountable for the lies that they promised in either of their election cycles. (In 2000, they did not get the popular vote. In 2004, they stole it under the guise of election reform.) Meanwhile, our economy is in decline while our deficits mount due to unwise tax cuts for the most-wealthy while engaged in the unprecedented and unprovoked invasion of another country.

So, who the fuck in the * administration is qualified to address spreading democracy to the world with their record at home?

8. It is a democracy until you try to change anything substantial

then the apparatus comes into play

Ignored or marginalised - Chomsky,
Scandal - Clinton, Teddy Kennedy etc
Assassination - JFK, MLK etc

9. Does this mean they aren't doing "Star Wars" any more?
The huge big threat that ushered in this Administration was stopping missles from hitting America even after everyone and I mean everyone told them that terrorism would be their number one issue. How much money have they thrown down that rat hole?
