N.M. Treasurer Quits As Impeachment Looms

Associated Press Writer

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico's indicted state treasurer resigned Wednesday shortly after lawmakers began considering whether he should be impeached.

Robert Vigil's resignation came more than a month after he was arrested and charged with extortion in a federal investigation into an alleged kickback scheme involving state investments.

Vigil, 52, announced his resignation, effective immediately, in a letter to Gov. Bill Richardson and Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron....

Vigil, a Democrat, was elected to a four-year term as treasurer in November 2002 and took office in 2003.

Sadly not all of the crooked dealers are their guys.

The whole system is badly in need of a good cleaning; it lends itself to these kind of kickbacks.

BUT if justly deserved impeachment is good enough for our 'rogues,' the time should come soon for the same to be applied to their guys; when we have majorities.

4. I hope we can clean house on the Dem side before 2006.
Identify the ones with problem politics, and just dry up their campaign donations.

3. This reminds me a bit of a Pat Oliphant...
... pastel drawing I saw in a collection of his work that was on exhibit in Santa Fe. It was of Manny Aragon (at the time, the Dem Senate leader) and Ray Sanchez (NM House speaker at the time), dressed in chefs' aprons, carving up a turkey.

Politics these days is like making sausage--it ain't pretty, and you don't really want to watch. Dems or `pugs alike, when it goes wrong, the people suffer. If Vigil broke the law, he deserves punishment for violating that public trust.
