WP: AOL Hires Cheney Daughter
AOL Hires Cheney Daughter
By Yuki Noguchi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, October 27, 2005; Page D05

America Online Inc. hired Mary Cheney, the 36-year-old daughter of Vice President Cheney, to offer advice on building up Web site businesses, a company spokesman said yesterday.

Cheney starts the job later this year and will work primarily with longtime AOL executive Ted Leonsis, who as president of AOL's Audience Business focuses on increasing viewership of its Web sites, said Nicholas Graham, a spokesman for the Dulles-based company. He declined to disclose additional details about her position.

"Her knowledge and experience in the public policy and business world will be helpful," Graham said. "This is a very busy time for us."...

Cheney worked as an executive for Coors Brewing Co. and on her father and President Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns. Since then, she signed a $1 million book deal with Simon & Schuster Inc. to write her memoir as the first openly gay member of a vice president's family.

Leonsis, who is also majority owner of the Washington Capitals hockey team, met Cheney socially through a shared interest in sports marketing, said a person familiar with their friendship. The two discussed a potential job several times earlier this year, but Cheney wanted to complete the book first....

2. Sure, why not!
A dink paper in Podunk feels the need to fire a copy-editor who
went to a peace rally, but Time-Warner-AOL can hire the Vice
President's daughter to help them run the business.

Must be that pesky "libruhl mediuh" at it again, ehh?

3. "Exec" at Coors? More BA resume padding.
She also arranged for Coors to finance an assortment of other gay-themed causes and events, including sponsoring a winner of the International Mr. Leather competition, an arrangement that entailed traveling with him to an assortment of bars and pageants for gay leather and S&M enthusiasts.

Brett Robben, a friend of Ms. Cheney from Colorado, recalled: "She was having to go to some pretty hard-core places to market the brand. She would laugh, like, Can you believe me walking into a big leather biker bar? She would just crack up."

Yeah that' sounds like an Executive position.

Forgive me for doubting your motive. We're in the midst of an antidiscrimination referendum fight here and I may be a bit overly sensitive to the issue right now.

I think the BFEE use her when needed, unfortunately. But she allows it to happen.

12. Okay STOP IT! What does this even mean?
AOL executive Ted Leonsis, who as president of AOL's Audience Business focuses on increasing viewership of its Web sites

What in the hell does that mean? He is in charge of a department of people who ....what in the hell does that MEAN!!?!??!

Wow talk about heavy at the top. Why do they have a guy doing the WHAT part of the business full time when you could just take all the techs, janitors, secretaries, accountants, etc. out to lunch every other Friday and get the same results?

Oh and now they hired someone -another person- to assist him.

Amazing.

17. AOL gave Homeland Security full access to all customer accounts
The American-based internet giant, AOL, wholly-owned by Time-Warner, has formed a working partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to permit unlimited surveillance of the millions of AOL online members, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

"AOL works 'closely with the DHS' to supply information on any AOL customer and allows agents from these entities 'free and unfettered' access to AOL Hq at Dulles, VA for the purpose of 'watching over and keeping surveillance' on the millions of AOL customers,' according to the report.

The legal basis for this is the recently Congress-approved Patriot Act which permits warrantless searches of persons and property. While information gleaned from delving into personal computer messages is supposed to be kept confidential, it appears that the DHS has exceeded their brief and obtained what appears to be strictly personal information which is then circulated to entities outside the DHS.

The Department of Commerce report also states that news of this surveillance has leaked out and is causing serious concern in the American, and European, business communities who are fearful that trade secrets may be given to other business entities, considered as "friendly" to the Bush Administration.

18. Her memoirs are sure to rocket to #1!
"Cheney worked as an executive for Coors Brewing Co. and on her father and President Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns. Since then, she signed a $1 million book deal with Simon & Schuster Inc. to write her memoir as the first openly gay member of a vice president's family."

A must read for every gay and lesbian person in America. The inspiring story of one young woman's struggle against discrimination and ridicule. The heartwarming chronicle of her brave rise from, ah, Republican token to, er, beneficiary of nepotistic cronyism in the dog-eat-dog world of, what the fuck was it again?!?

All I can say is, damn that Kerry guy for trying to exploit her during an (already rigged) election. Has he left, at long last, no sense of decency?!?

20. It ain't what you know, or what you might be qualified for that counts,
its who's your daddy. Suuuurrrrreeee she has knowledge and experience in the business world. I'll say it again for at least the 5th time on this board, the 18 year old assistant manager at pizza hut knows more about business than the fascistas. Their only claim is they get hired because of their power position, not because they can run a business successfully. Our president, btw, has run businesses, but only into the ground.
