Banker shot dead after EU warning on gang crime

Nikolai Chavdarov in Sofia
Thursday October 27, 2005
The Guardian

An unidentified gunman yesterday killed one of Bulgaria's richest and most influential bankers in the capital, Sofia, a day after the EU warned the country it had to speed up reforms to curb organised crime and corruption.

Emil Kyulev, 49, owned a majority stake in the DZI Financial Group and controlled DZI Bank, one of Bulgaria's largest banks. His personal fortune has been estimated at £280m.

Interior minister Rumen Petkov, said that those behind the murder "do not accept the European orientation of Bulgaria and want to hinder its progress towards the EU".

1. Shades of Maxwell and Safra?

"Mystery and Death on the Riviera
The official explanation for the death of multibillionaire banker Edmond Safra, who was asphyxiated a year ago in a locked bathroom of his Monte Carlo penthouse, is that one of Safra's nurses set the fire in order to heroically rescue his employer. But why was the banker without his Mossad-trained guards? If reports of a second fire are true, who lit it? And were there two bullets in Safra's body? With an ear to the jet-set whispers, and an eye on the feud between Safra's brothers and his widow, Lily, Dominick Dunne explores the Riviera's dangerous mystery.

2. It's been a good 12 months for deaths of dodgy bankers. Must
be the ghost of 'God's Banker' Roberto Calvi haunting all those crooks as the Calvi murder trial draws closer to it's November resumption.

3. And who was the Lazard banker that recently died under
mysterious (and creepy circumstances)? Also didn't a former Citicorp exec "leap" to his death within the past year as well?

First scientists, now bankers....

4. Lots of shfts and power plays in the global financial/currency sector
and so any deaths are highly suspect imo. The sumo wrestlers of the elite throwing their weight around and duking it out. It won't be pretty.
