Newsview: Withdrawal Shows Bush's Weakness
WASHINGTON - Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers' sudden withdrawal underscores the strength of the social conservatives who form President Bush's political base and the weakness of a president buffeted by one political misfortune after another.

Her withdrawal came after restive conservatives mounted a stinging campaign against her credentials.

Heading into what may be the darkest days of his presidency, Bush still has an opportunity to regain the support of that rebellious bloc and avoid drifting earlier than usual into the lame duck status that eventually claims all second-term U.S. presidents.

4. they've gotta put him down now
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 03:04 PM by CountAllVotes
and say he is a lame duck and now they'll say he didn't know about any of this indictment stuff and that he has mental problems or something.

This way this crook will get off the hook, or so he thinks.

It is far from over.

Don't you remember * saying: "You can trust me on this one." re: Miers?

Trust? Since when!!!

LIAR, WAR CRIMINAL& THIEF!!

2. Does everyone agree it was the wingers who took Meiers down?
Because I disagree. I think the Senators on the committee were so disgusted with her obvious lack of qualifications, that they let it be known she didn't have the votes to even get to a Senate floor vote. I think all the screaming by the right-wing wackjobs was just background noise, and when it comes down to it, Bush doesn't give any more of a flying f*ck for them than he does for left-wingers. Bush really wanted Meiers badly for his own reasons, but the reality sunk in that she simply was not going to make it on her qualifications.

5. I agree.
This is being given a conservative spin, but in reality she was just a poor choice, and unqualified. They are attempting to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with this move. The media is playing along.

11. Sen. Leahy on Newshour last night
was advocating that congress not rush to judgement, that she be allowed to have a full hearing to flesh out her judicial qualifications. So * can't pin this on Democratic senators, nope.

7. The withdrawal shows something else critical
There are some things that they are terrified about being questioned about under oath. It became essential to the Administration that this nomination not see even a half day of hearings.

8. If Bush Couldn't Get a Loyal Conservative Like Miers on the Court
I somehow doubt he'll be able to get a known right-winger like Priscilla Owens or Janice Rogers Brown through the Senate. We may be looking forward to another Bernancke type who will draw praise from all quarters. This is good news.

18. There is no Bernanke type for SCJ.
The major complaints by the Right Wing about Miers were really sexist and elitist. So he's going to pick a white male who attended an elite university and has a background in constitutional law and will overturn Roe v. Wade.

The reason Harry Reid emphasized not focusing on judicial background is that, of that older generation, there really aren't as many perfectly qualified women out there.

The qualifications arguement is an excuse used to select white males for the job.

I didn't want her because she sure sounded pro-life to me, but this whole qualifications arguement is a Right Wing excuse to avoid giving women top jobs.

10. I heard someone say about a week ago,
that if Bush decided not to move forward with Miers or that if she withdrew her nomination, it would be seen as a failure of Bush.

The right wing certainly was not happy with her and the democrats basically didn't have to do anything but sit back and watch the show!

And then you have little Scotty saying that if people knew her, they would know she is qualified. But the problem was, no one knew anything about her!! And she seemed to be reversing her position every time she talked to someone. First she was for a women's right to choose and then she was against it!! And since she was never a Judge, there was not much info on her background and not much she has written about her opinions either.

I think it was multiple problems that led her to her downfall......but the Republicans certainly didn't make it better.

But watch out for the next nominee, I'm sure Bush is eager now to nominate someone that his base approves of!

12. What's * afraid of? Didn't anyone tell him he can't run again?
He's the frickin president, if he wants to nominate a dimbo, let him, what possible difference can it make if the dobsonite wing approves or not? Is he that clueless? So now we know he's not very smart, he's not very strong, he's afraid for his job, what next can he fail at?

14. Withdrawal Shows Bush's Weakness (is this a subliminal heading) for a
iraq withdrawal?.. set up by Yahoo?

Since * has said "An immediate withdrawal of our troops in Iraq, or the broader Middle East, as some have called for, would only embolden the terrorists and create a staging ground to launch more attacks against America and free nations," he said. "So long as I'm the president, we will stay, we will fight, and we will win the war on terror."

Actually, I'm relieved for her -- any appearance before the Judiciary Committee would probably have been a humiliating experience.

As for -- I'm sure he's already blaming Laura, being the wimpy little GIRLY-MAN that he is.
